Question about the Song "You're Beautiful"

In the video for the song he jumps to his death at the end.

Hrrm? A flan is this. Ignore that latest paragraph about passionfruit flan.

No he doesn’t. He makes a genuine, and rather frightening, jump into the sea from a high platform, but he’s very much alive at the bottom. To many people’s chagrin. He used to be in the army, see.

(I’m disturbed that I know so much about this.)

I also don’t think it can be about an ex, because there’s the line “but I’ll never be with you.” If it were an ex, the word “never” wouldn’t apply. “Never again,” perhaps, but not just “never” by itself.

It’s just lazy songwriting. Have you heard his other songs? He’s not exactly clever with his rhymes. If the word “fly” ends a line, you can bet “sky” will end the next one. A five year-old can rhyme as well as this guy.

Pretty music in the sing, though, I’ll give him that.

Not where I come from, it isn’t. A flan is a sweet or savoury open-topped pie in a crust that has been baked in a flan dish

You’re all miis-hearing it. He’s saying 'I’ve got a can."

My award for best rhyme goes to Eminem for rhyming “Slim Shady” and “imitating”

Pure songwriting genius…

was I the only one expecting this was about the song

*You’re sixteen, you’re beautiful, and you’re mine *

I would call those tarts. I heard that might have a different meaning in Britain too, eh?

Thanks for the education!

How much of the author himself saying that it is about an ex do you need to convince you?

I nominate Avril Levigne for:

You come over unannounced
Dressed up like you’re someone else…

(Ounced, surely?)

Just MHO: The song was inspired by his seeing his ex-girlfriend, but the actualy song is about a brief glimpse of a beautiful stranger.

You appear to have linked to a picture of a crème caramel. Is this really considered a Mexican dish in the States? Wikis Mmm, interesting…

We would call some of them tarts too; tarts and quiches are more or less subsets of ‘flan’. The thing you linked to is called Creme Caramel here (or just caramel custard - if it doesn’t actually have the caramel topping, I think it would just be ‘egg custard’ - this is genuinely the first time I’ve ever heard it called ‘flan’, so thanks also to you (and Nava) for the education.

So “the plan” is to make this beautiful stranger into a pie?

I would never have guessed.

Regards,
Shodan

PS - Thanks to all for the responses.

Because of Youtube, this song always reminds me of work. My Cubicle

In that case, the correct lyrics would be “I’ve got a pan”.

When I lived in the Bronx people were renowned for their flan (pronounced flahn) and I always thought of it as a Spanish dish. One guy, I think from the DR, brought in his wife’s famous flan. Even up here they serve it as one of the few desserts at the authentic Mexican place.
