Question about Who lyrics

I’ve been curious about this for a while and am hoping the Teeming Millions can shed some light.

I’ve noticed that the word “coat” appears several times in lyrics of songs by The Who:

“I wear my wartime coat in the wind and sleet” from Quadrophenia
“Keep me warm, let me wear your coat”–Behind Blue Eyes
The song Don’t Let Go the Coat

Since it’s not a very common word in song lyrics, I’ve always wondered if there is some significance to it. Anything written about this, rumors, speculation, etc?

I’ve often wondered about Pete’s facination with coats as well. I’ve just chalked it up to him being a very strange person.

IIRC, Meher Baba, Townshend’s spiritual guru, had a proverb about about clinging onto God’s coat.
