Question about Workplace Policies

I marvel at the things you guys put up with in terms of work:

  1. Yes so is everyone else I know other than people paid cash.
  2. Never falls on a weekend. Always a work day. If it happens to be a holiday pay comes early.
  3. Everywhere I’ve worked is the same.
  4. Very.
  5. No Australian business would even contemplate crap like you are talking about. It is even considered tacky adopting anything other than weekly or fortnightly pay schedules. Largely only foreign companies do it.

Even salaried people? I’m paid per month, i.e., my salary is monthly. There’s nothing at all unusual about being paid twice monthly, which is different than fortnightly by two weeks per year. And of course payday could be any day of the week, except Sat./Sun. which would be Friday.

[li]I’m paid by direct deposit[/li][li]If payday falls on a weekend or holiday, I’m paid before, not after[/li][li]I work in the computer software industry, in the Silicon Valley[/li][li]Worldwide company, over 40K employees[/li][li]I’ve worked at other companies. The policy is always the same. The only job I ever had in the Valley that gave me a paycheck was a tech support job where I was actually working for Manpower.[/li][/ul]

Some follow-up to make my post compare to others:

We have option of paper check or direct deposit but I don’t know anyone who gets a paper check.

Our pay cycle is 15th of month, last day of month. Makes it easy to remember but OTOH the day of the week changes, and is sometimes on a holiday or weekend.

I have no idea what California law is, and since California is usually liberal about this stuff and very details-oriented, I have no wish to find out!

  1. Are you paid via direct deposit?

Yes. Four or five years ago they required all employees to use direct deposit.
2. If payday falls on a weekend or holiday, are you paid before or after the weekend or holiday?

Always before. We are paid every other Wednesday according to the posted schedule but my checking account shows the deposit to be on Tuesday.
3. What industry do you work in?

Education - public
4. How big is your company?

Approximately 30,000

  1. Have you worked at other companies in your industry, and if so, how does your current company’s policies compare to what other firms are doing?
I have been with my current employer for more than 15 years. I think we were paid on the 5th and the 15th of every month, received a paper check, and received our checks on the last working day before the holiday.
