I’m not really going to go into details about the reason why (well okay, it’s for a game design document I work on for fun in my spare time), but I need help translating a sentence, and I realize this is beyond the scope of translation programs.
“My dear friends, can any dragon here lend their aid in my time of need?”
Ah hell, it’s the quote for when a character casts a spell to summon a dragon. I’m perfectly happy to accept any suggestions for a better quote as well. The character is somewhat inspired by Reis from Final Fantasy Tactics: she was once an ordinary woman who has become enchanted in such a way that she is spiritually bonded to dragon-kind. She still behaves in a polite and mild manner, even downright meek, despite being very powerful and having the unique ability to tame dragons. I want here to speak in Norwegian because her story-arc is going to tie into a number of Norse mythological references (again, somewhat inspired by Reis being affianced to a Beowulf).

What kind of norwegian do you want her to speak?
I’m not familiar with Final Fantasy gaming, other than the Final Fantasy VII movie.
Is the game set in a modern setting? Then its natural for her to say the spell in the modern norwegian language:
“Kjære venner, kan en drage her hjelpe meg i nødens stund?”
If the game is set in more ancient times, then maybe in old norse, or new norwegian to make it comprehensible.

That’ll do fine. While my concept is set in a fantasy world that’s roughly at the outset of a rennaisance, I just want something that’d be recognizably scandinavian (because of the Norse thing, and because I wanted something that wouldn’t be English or Japanese, heh).
As for Final Fantasy, if you’re curious I’ll give you a quick summary: FF1-5 where pretty much medieval high fantasies, albeit with a bit of steampunk (intentionally anachronistic technology designed to appear suitably primitive). FF6 is definitely more like late 16th-early 18th century european, with a ton of steampunk elements (the bad guys, the Empire, have a very industrialized society). FF7, well, you saw the movie: It’s slightly futuristic, with a lot of backwards-trends in how the technology is actually utilized (fighting with broadswords and spears when you have readily available automatic and semi-automatic firearms?). FF8 is similar to 7, but with less of a sci-fi feel to it (more modern day+magic). FF9 is back to a 14th century Europe with steampunk look. FFX is kind of indefineable, I guess you’d say that the “past” is slightly futuristic, with magic, and the “present” of the story could be described as iron age (with different cultures having various levels of access to technological relics), with more of an asian/pacific-islander cultural overlay. FF Tactics was a late-medieval society built on the ruins of an industrial age society. FF Mystic Quest was Medieval fantasy with steampunk. I can’t really think of how to describe FF Tactics Advance’s setting. And… that’s all the FF’s I’ve played that I can think of atm! :rolleyes:
