How odd. My husband and I both have the day off.
FWIW, he’s a software engineer for a large company, each individual department made the decision about that day. Most of the departments in his branch office are taking the day off.
I work for a small, private medical lab that doesn’t do anything urgent, and we’re already closed holidays and weekends, and the manager decided to stay closed on 9-11. I think I assumed most people had the day off, so this thread surprised me.
Wow–November issue in September? That sounds so pleasant. We closed November last week, which means the items we reported on were set in stone about a month ago. How I wish I could mention something I only found out about 3 months in advance, rather than 4-6.
I’m of the opposite opinion. If there was any benefit of the 9/11 attacks, it’s that Americans might take their time getting in to work in the morning and (gasp!) take more time off. Not that I want to be Europe, but a few more days off wouldn’t hurt…
I work for United Air Lines…if anyone would have off, we, and American Air Lines, would…But I will be at work on Sept. 11…Our World Headquarters in Chicago will be having some low key ceremonies and remembrances, but where I work in Northern Va. we will just have quiet reflection time if we so desire…The eternal quest for the almighty buck continues.
I don’t have the day off, and I’m glad I don’t. I do not relish the idea of having the whole day off to just sit around and go over those events again and again. I hope to be very busy that day, it will be much easier on my mind.
I really don’t understand why people put so much emphasis on anniversaries of things happening. It’s a year later. So what? I don’t mean to sound crass or insensitive, but what does the fact that the earth went all the way around the sun have to do with anything? It doesn’t bother me that other people might want to do something special because they derive some significance from that, but some of the comments in this thread make it sound as if there is significant feeling that there should be a holiday, which just annoys me. Yeah, yeah, “who could complain about a free day off of work?” It ain’t free, kid.
If Sept. 11 does become a holiday (the day-off-from-work kind), then say good-bye to Labor Day. Do you actually think that the average US employer would give two days off so close to each other?
I actually think that it would be easier for, say, the average schoolchild to remember 9/11 by being in school and learning about it. Of course, my high school tried to take that same stand with MLK Jr. Day, and got a lot of complaints about being “racist”, so we got the day off and went to school on Presidents’ Day instead. Notice that the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor is remembered, but has not been a noted day for parties or picnics or “blowout sales”.
galt, why do people celebrate birthdays? Yearly cycles of rememberance and celebration have probably been common since the dawn of civilization. Something about the lighting and the weather of this time of year remind me of school starting. The association between the time of year and the event have been etched in my mind. Now, this season will also probably remind me of Sept. 11. I think that seasons serve as annual reminders for a lot of things, and our calendar reflects this.
Not. Pleasant. At. All. They cut a week off our production schedule and we’re all running around like Lucille Ball on crack. I am so close to quitting this hamster-wheel . . .
Those people who were attacked on 9/11/01 were working or going to work. Due to the nature of my job I could of been going there or have been there at the time (fairly unlikely though). I would think this day should be a day of higher productivity not a day off to honor those who were working.
I can see something the 1st year along the lines of a few hrs off in the morning but not a day off.
Also I don’t like the idea of having a day off to celabrate the attack that colapsed the WTC - which is what it will become in time - most likely will be the 2nd monday in September so people can have a long weekend.
I work for the State. There has been no word of any official day off to commemorate 9/11. I would imagine a lot of people will be wearing red-white-blue. Maybe they will even announce a “moment of silence” on the PA, I dunno.
The ONLY way we’d get a day off is if some kind of threat is made and the administration decides that evacuating the building for the day is the safest SOP.
I don’t think it should be a holiday. But I feel that everyone who was living in the United States last year will remember that day until their dying breath.

I’ll be taking the morning off for a medical procedure and then be back at work in the afternoon. It will be logged as personal time. The phone company don’t shut its doors for nothin’.
Except of course official federal holidays. We don’t even get the day after Thanksgiving off.
