Question for Military History buffs: PT

When did the US (or any other modern) army start running during PT?

I’ve seen old films of doughboys doing squat-thrusts, and sailors windmilling away at physical drill on the decks of Great White Fleet-era ships, but I’m not sure that they put on plimsoles and ran laps chanting “boom-chaka-laka-laka-laka” until much later.

I recall reading about Gen. Von Stueben training the US Revolutionary War troops, including ‘quick march’ and cross field running. I’ll see if I can find a cite later.

So apparently it goes back at least to the 1770’s. But I don’t know if you’d call that a ‘modern’ army.
