If you want something peppier, you always have the option of adopting the Sex Pistol’s version!
Eh, I was never a fan of Pickelhaube sauce ravigote :p.
Erm… in Northern Ireland, where it’s one of the few tunes that both communities share and isn’t going to get somebody or other too aerated if they think they’re being identified with The Other Lot.
(Though, oddly, I believe the rugby team, which draws its team from all across Ireland, uses the Republic’s national anthem without too many people seeming to make a fuss).
No, the rugby team uses ‘Ireland’s Call’, which was written specially for that purpose and for that reason - because the team comes from both sides of the border. At matches in the Republic, they use ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ (the Irish national anthem) as well, but outside the Republic it’s just ‘Ireland’s Call’.
The French National Anthem and the Russian/Soviet Anthem are the two that seem most inspiring to me. Click the link and be enthralled as Mireille Mathieu rolls her R’s! (Of course, it’s this rendition of La Marseillaise that often almost brings tears to my eyes. )
Thailand has two anthems, one for King and one for Country. To be safe, stand up and remain motionless when you hear either. (In 100,000s of miles of driving in Thailand, the only time I’ve seen a cop chase a motorist in hot pursuit was when he failed to remained stopped along the main road while police did their 6 PM flag-lowering/country-anthem at the adjacent police station. :smack: )
Here’s the Welsh national anthem:
The inevitable echoes in a large stadium just add pleasing harmonies. What? No we don’t. It is a traditional scottish song yes, much like Auld Lang Syne, but it’s no kind of national anthem.
For patriotic you want “Scots Wae Hae” (Scots Wha Hae - Wikipedia) or “Flower of Scotland” (the one we use for rugby).
I would much rather this be played at the citizenship ceremony folderol that I have to go through
than GStQ, thanks. Not sure what is patriotic about that particular song.
This is one of my absolute favourite songs. Such a beautiful melody and evocative words.
The Star-Spangled banner makes me feel warm and fuzzy.
I’m English, and my favourite is ‘I Vow to Thee My Country’. Specifically, as it appears in Jupiter from Holst’s planet suite.
I’m from Catalonia, in Spain. Our regional anthem is about murdering people with a sickle.
Not a joke.
Therefore I’d say that the only song that makes me feel even slightly patriotic is the one from the greatest soccer team ever.
The Australian national anthem "Advance Australia Fair’ is a bit of a joke because people can barely remember the FIRST verse let alone the other ones.
My preference, although it’s only a ‘pop’ song and carries no official weight as such, is “We are Australian” (The Seekers)
Chorus:
We are one, but we are many
And from all the lands on earth we come.
We share a dream, and sing with one voice,
I am, you are, we are Australian
