Question for Scrapbookies - Silhouette-1 vs. Silhouette SD

I figured there have to be some scrapbooking fans here. I personally am not one, but my wife is, and she’s asked for a Silhouette SD for Christmas.

We’re taking it easy on gifts this year, so it’s going to be eating up quite a bit of her gift budget, but if that’s what she wants it’s what I’m likely to get her.

While searching Amazon I found the SD, which is what I was planning on , http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0045KM5PY/ref=asc_df_B0045KM5PY1307589?smid=AQHLGH28QID4F&tag=nextagusmp0357673-20&linkCode=asn&creative=395129&creativeASIN=B0045KM5PYbut then I found the Silhouette-1 here http://www.amazon.com/QuicKutz-SILHOUETTE-1-Digital-Craft-Cutter/dp/B000Z45PYW/ref=pd_luc_sbs_01_04_t_lh.

The Silhouette-1 is twice as much - which is more than I’m planning on spending, but if there was a good reason to pay the extra I would. Thing is, I don’t know anything about this so I don’t know.

Every search I’ve tried to do for comparison just compares it to the competition, not the different models. Looking at http://www.silhouetteamerica.com/silhouette.aspx, I don’t even see the Silhouette-1 mentioned.

Anyone have any news, views, or opinions?

Joe,
The Silhouette SD is the newest machine. It loads the paper automatically and is a tad quieter and quicker. It comes with and SD slot so you don’t have to be hooked up to the computer to use it. I think it may have some other new features too.
That high priced one you found is the OLD model.
I have the SD on order from http://www.uscutter.com/ It is only $179 and 9.99 to ship. They also have great customer service and a forum for the users of their product. I got the bundle deal and it came with a bunch of vinyl.

Now y’all are making me wish I’d waited for one of these instead of getting the Cricut. Maybe Santa will be good to me too this year.

I know a lot of people have the Cricut and love it.
The Silhouette is cool because you don’t use cartridges. You can use all the fonts on your computer too.

Yes, my wife researches the hell out of everything - on this I can understand, on a $25 play tent for my daughter to put in the play room I don’t see it being worth the four or five hours research.

She didn’t want the Cricut because she didn’t want to get locked into the cartridges. Depending on how easy or hard the Silhouette ACTUALLY is to use graphics files…she may wish otherwise.

Guess we’ll see around Christmas.

My Cricut was a gift. I do have software so that I can cut any true-type font and some graphics from clip art, but it cost me $85. I tend to buy the cartridges on sale. It works well for when the kids are in my studio and I could totally understand someone who isn’t very computer savvy preferring it. If I were making the purchase myself, I’d definitely go for the Silhouette.
