Question on paintig my ceiling...

I have a painted ceiling with with the brail ( lumpy ) texture. It’s getting a little discolored over the years and I would like to re-do it. What do I need to consider, and what tools might I need? I have a lot of vacation to use up, so time doesn’t really matter. I don’t haver a clue how to paint a texured ceiling though.

I’m not sure what brail is, but do you mean stucco?

We just painted our ceiling, which was textured. We got rollers that were softer - picked up a bit more paint - and “meant” to be used for textured surfaces.

Couple of rollers, detail brushes (2" worked well for us), an extender for your roller (unless you want to get up close and personal with your ceiling), tape, and lots of dropcloth. For what it’s worth, paints with an eggshell sheen and up went on easier than flat and flat enamel sheen.

If it’s stucco, then I don’t know… a sprayer?

Probably means “popcorn” texture. There are special split foam roller covers for this. Ask at a paint store or at a well supplied home store. Add a 4’ or 6’ poll, maybe an adjustable one.
I paint out a 5 gal bucket with a roller screen. Easier to use than a roller pan.

You’ll ned a good brush for cut in. And plenty of drops. Overhead leads to drips, count on it.

Enjoy!

Also… unless specially requested, we always paint ceilings with flat. No particular reason (other than hides imperfections a bit). Go with what you like, tho.

My Firefighter/ hazmat tech husband says STOP!
before you do anything, have it tested for asbestos. Houses built prior to 1967 have ceilings of crushed asbestos mixed with paint and sometimes glitter. They were sprayed on, and come off rather easily if disturbed.
The best thing to do, if indeed it tests positive, is call in a Pro. The house will have to be unoccupied while the work is going on.
There’s no danger in day to day living as long as the surface is left undisturbed. Once the integrity is interrupted, its a serious hazard.
Good luck and stay safe.
