Question!

I might sound like a total jackass asking this, but I never really grasped the concept behind it-
Why do people place quarters next to a piece of jewelry when they photograph it? I’ve also seen this with other things as well- from make-up to electronics.

Why do people do this?

So that you can get an idea of size?

To show scale.

To show scale?

Some people put rulers in their picture.

Everyone has it right - it’s simply to give you an idea of the actual size of the object, comparing it to an item you KNOW the size of.

Which is why Batman’s early attempts at getting work as a photographer failed so miserably: that giant penny kept showing up in all the pictures, and nobody wanted to buy a teensy little necklace.

As noone else has bothered to answer… scale.

what?

thanks for shedding light on the obvious…
