Appologies if this thread is in the wrong forum.
I am currently working on a research project studying poultry movements in California. Given the state’s ethic composition and some initial research, I’m guessing that there are a number of Santeria practitioners here-abouts. I know very little about Santeria and I’m having a hard time gathering information about practicies specifically in California. There are a lot of writtings on practices in the East Coast, but I can’t figure out if practices are similar here. And, the information available doesn’t tend to look at what I’m trying to research. I am itching to get some more details about poultry and their relationship to Santeria practices in California.
Please note that I am not interested in getting any one in trouble. I don’t need names. General ideas are fine so long as they apply to California. I am by no means any sort of animal rights activist. If you prefer, you can email me instead of posting.

Do many Santeria practitioners buy their birds or do they raise them themselves?
-
Is it likely that one Santeria practitioner will obtain his birds from another, or is each practitioner responsible for obtaining his own birds?
-
Are chickens the only kind of birds used, or are pigeons, ducks, or any other sort of poultry used? If so, what is the reasoning behind using another kind of bird? For example, are there certain rituals that call for a different bird, or is expense usually the factor in choosing a type of bird?

What happens to the bird after the ceremony? Is it burried or eaten or burned?
