Is Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) - you know, Jars of Clay and all that - enjoyed by the Mormon community? Or is it eschewed because it’s Rock & Roll (more or less)? Does Mormonism have its own version of CCM, produced by Mormon recording artists?
Do Mormon congregations have that peppy, upbeat worship music that’s a thing in many evangelical congregations now? Do they sing the same hymns that other Christians sing (“How Great Thou Art,” “Blessed Assurance,” etc.)? Or do they have their own hymnal?
Yes, there are mormon artists that sing original music that members enjoy. Nothing official or endorsed. Mormons are not discouraged from listening to any music unless it promotes sinful behavior. I’m not too hip to that any more (I no longer attend), but Kenneth Cope used to be popular, for example. Sample.
It’s been many years for me, so some of this is probably outdated.
I never heard any non-mormon Christian artist. I would think they would now. They have Mormon artists, but I don’t know the label or whatever.
The church music was piano/organ only. I would call the style more “reverent”. When I went to other churches one big difference was the upbeat peppy music. I found it sort of disrespectful.
They have their own hymnbook. Most of the songs were written by mormons. They did have some of the same hymns that other churches have. In many cases they omitted verses that had doctrine that didn’t fit with their doctrine.
