Questions for Ladies... about the period.

So, I got a couple of period questions for the ladies here to answer.

1: When you say “heavy flow day,” how much blood are we talking about here?

2: Is it true that it’s nearly impossible to get pregnant while on your period?

3: What exactly is happening to your insides that make your period happen? I know it has something to do with the uturen lining, but I’m not sure what.

Anyways, any help is appreciated.

Thanks

As for question #1, all I can say is that the amount the medical communities says there is (in terms of ml or whatever) always seems to be completely off in terms of what I experience trying to deal with the mess. But then I feel the same way about male ejaculate.

I have even less useful input on the other two q’s.

Google is your friend.

  1. Go to http://www.google.com
  2. Type “menstruation” into the search window
  3. Follow the links.

p.s. This is the 3rd link listed. It answers all of your questions: http://www.fwhc.org/moon.htm

1: When you say “heavy flow day,” how much blood are we talking about here?**

I think it varies from woman to woman. Unfortunately I can’t give you any sort of number for reference (I don’t exactly measure it.)

2: Is it true that it’s nearly impossible to get pregnant while on your period?

I, uh, wouldn’t know anything about that.

3: What exactly is happening to your insides that make your period happen? I know it has something to do with the uturen lining, but I’m not sure what.

My high school biology is a bit spotty(har!) but here goes:
A sudden drop in hormones triggers the uterus to shed the lining that builds up in it every month. I don’t recall what the lining is made of, but it’s a velvety material meant to cushion a fertilized egg and developing embryo. Now, either the uterine lining liquefies and slides out, or it disintegrates, breaking the tiny blood vessels that have grown into it over the last month.

Here’s another one.

Damn, Green Bean beat me to it.

I wasn’t exactly the world’s most attentive biology student, as you can see above. “Now, either this happens, or something else happens…”

Huh! This freaked me out when I got married and found out what a heavy flow day ment. I thought my wife commited cold blooded murder one some one when I saw the remains of a “heavy flow day”

I don’t know, on my heaviest days I would say Ioose at least two tablespoons of blood.

My Mother is an obstetrics nurse, and I asked her. Her response was: “It’s unlikly, but it’s possible.”

This one was already answered, so I won’t make you read my explaination.

Here’s the obligatory link to the wonderful Museum of Menstruation, which anyone who has ever wondered anything about menses will be glad to see.

So as not to gross anyone out, when I say baby food here, please don’t imagine anything tomato-based. A nice banana pudding would be good. Besides, I like banana pudding.

Imagine a small jar of baby food, or even half a jar. Now attempt to feed it to a very cranky baby who spits it everywhere. At the end of the process, you’ll be surprised to see exactly how much area mess half a jar of baby food can make. Now imagine your uterus as the half a jar of banana pudding and your vagina as a very cranky baby. No matter how many cleanup products you use, it’s always gonna spit something past them, somewhere. That’s heavy flow for ya. Not quantity, but mess power.

Enough description?

Corr (who’s thinking Vagina Expectorata would be a great band name)

Regarding getting pregnant while on your period: it is impossible for you to ovulate while you are on your period. This does not mean that you cannot get pregnant by having sex during your period.

The reason is that sperm can survive inside the female body for several days (4-5 days in optimal conditions, I believe). It is highly unlikely that this would happen, but it is theoretically possible that you could have sex towards the end of your period, ovulate a couple days later, and wind up pregnant. So no, being on your period is not a definite indicator that you cannot get pregnant.
