Help me out with the last two, there – especially “is.” Are the initial sounds in “is” and “oppose” not perfectly common phonetic realizations of the letters “i” and “o”?

I think they mis-read the OP, as wanting words that the first letter of the word is pronounced like the letter it starts with. I read it that way the first time.

Don’t think so, because then they’d have to start with a long-i and a long-o sound, respectively.

“Oppose” is pronounced more like “uppose.”
