Quick, name that baby girl....

coven, I was telling someone the other day how much I liked the name Ruby.

The male-sounding female name is a long-standing tradition in some parts of the (American) South. I know women named Hunter and Briggs, both for their grandmother’s maiden names. So depending on what part of the world you live in, it may be a more established tradition than you think. But I did have the Jameson’s Whiskey thought as well.

Think about how the name will look 30 years from now on a business card. Pixie is cute for a 5 year old, but it doesn’t work at all for an adult.

I like the names Anna and Clara myself.

Congratulations!

If you like the name Jamie, you could spell it differently ala Jayme.
Personally, I am fond of the name Rachel Lynette.

How about :

Grace
Aubrey
Gabrielle (I agree with Bosda Di’Chi of Tricor)
Lily
Abby

Congratulations to you both, Washte & Kal. I know this has been a long journey for you. Best wishes to your family.

I’d like to add Isabel to the list - spelled that way, not the “-lle” way. That’s a lovely name, but not too flashy.

One of my mother’s aunts was named Cresentia (she went by Cresence or Cressie as a girl) and I’ve always kinda liked the ‘Cresence’ varient. I’m not sure what it’s origin or meaning is.

I also love the name Ruby, although any baby named that will have to put up with people singing “Ruby Tuesday” when they learn her name. Along those lines, I also love the name Pearl.

My other favorite girls’ names are Anna, Rose, Fiona, Nina, Julia, Lucy, Jane, Eileen, Clara, Ella, and Mary. Or you could just be super-cool and name her Kendra, after me.

I’m so happy for you and Kal, since I know this little one will be loved very much!

I’ve always been fond of Catrina (you could call her Cat!), Danielle, and Patricia.

Some of my favorites are Mary, Juliet, Christina, Ingrid, Erika, Karin, Sarah, and Stephanie.

Congrats on your baby girl. Personally, I like the idea of using the name James somehow - Erin James (which I think sounds very dignified) or Erin Jamie.

“Takoda” is horrible. Really. Don’t do that to the poor child. I like “Jamie”, etc. I dislike exotic, “interesting” names as a general rule. Don’t make up names out of thin air, and don’t cutesify the spelling. Baby Jamie will thank you someday.

Oh, and congrats

Call me old-fashioned, but I like old-fashioned names.

If you’re going for some variation on James, I can’t really think of a strict feminine variation, but there are many classy names beginning with J, listed by previous posters.

I am partial to classics. Rachel, Victoria, Sarah, Elizabeth, Susan, Mary, Christina, Karen, etc.

But hey, I’m not naming the kid.

Oh, and congrats! (With the obligatory smiley face. )

I’m partial to the classics as my daughters are Mary Alyssa and Katherine Grace, but I really like the name Jaime. I think that would be lovely.

I also like Jean (or Jeanne), Naomi, Rachel, Michele, Corinne and Carmen off the top of my head. But I think this baby is a Jaime. Congrats.

Well, I’ll second what some other people said – I like Jamison for a girl. It even breaks a couple of my personal “name rules”, but yet I still like it. A couple of people also suggested James for a middle name, which is really cute (I grew up with a Melody John and knew an Elizabeth Andrew, named for their fathers, so I like that middle name idea). I’ll also second the NO to Takoda. Erin is cute enough, but really not my style. Erin James would be nice.

I like a lot of different names though. Tessa, Celia, Faith, and Gwen have been topping my list lately. Hubby and I both love Annaliese (and Anna), and Amira (an Arabic name meaning princess). I also really like Afton and Zea. Ooh and Bronwen and Cadence. Maya, Meredith, and Mallory keep running through my head, and I don’t know why all the M names suddenly, but they are really pretty. I’ll also give a big thumbs up to whoever suggested Ruby. It’s gorgeous. I could go on and on. I’ve been “naming my children” since I was a little girl. I’ll never be able to settle on one though.

I say go with Jaime. To my surprise, it wasn’t one of the top 100 girls names for 2002. So your girl probably won’t have to go to school with 3 other Jaimes in her class, as is currently happening for kids like Tyler, Dylan, Dakota, Mackenzie, etc.

I’m not really a traditional name guy - I love unique names, and I was always glad to not share my name with anybody in school - but names that sound like they’re trying to be unique suck. (It’s a fine line.) You know, “love of the cosmos” is a great thought, but if the name is in ancient Norwegian, the kid will get tired of the mispronunciations, the people asking what it means (which they will) and of spelling it for everyone. :stuck_out_tongue:

Take the first names of both grandmothers and arrange them to sound best.

I like the sound of Takoda, but I’m big on ethnic names. And Jamie is a good, all-purpose “neutral” name that goes nicely with many surnames. I prefer the spelling of Jamie, but be warned that your child will spend a lifetime correcting those who spell it Jaime (and probably vice-versa). She will also occasionally be called Jaymers and Hymie. Trust me on this.

How about Jamie as a first name and Takoda as a middle name? Jamie Takoda.

I just thought of something: since “Jacques” is James in French, would Jacqueline be a female version of James, so to speak? It’s also a very classy name… just throwing that out for you.

You cheeky git! Why I oughta…

Give us a hug, would ya?

I’m sorry, that name cracks me up a little. Fayina may or may not mean “free one” in Russian, but in Polish it sounds like the feminine form of “cool” or “bitchin’”.

Congrats, anyway. Worse comes to worst, you can always name her after me.

Thank you everyone for the congratulations. It has been a very long and hard road to get this far. I’m quite excited about our addition to the family

Enough of you have said no way Jose to Takoda so I tried it out with my boss. She loved the name but, after hearing it then repeating it, she always came back with Dakota. So, rather than strap the poor lass with a name she’ll have to repeat and explain it will have to wait to be used.

I’ve enjoyed many of the names you all have come up with. Some of them will be put aside for further consideration.

My only hesitation with Jamison is that it’s just a bit too masculine for my taste. Also, Erin James sounds like a Kenny Rogers’ song…

Kalhoun - I really like Jamin. In the UK, however, we would probably need to add either an i or y - Jaimin or Jaymin - as it would tend to be pronounced ‘Jammin’.

Nutty Bunny - Keira is nifty. It reminds me of the name Kierre (Key’ eerie) that I heard yonks ago and have always liked.

Bosda - Zinaida would work to a certain degree, but there is no need for exaggeration here  BTW, love the sig!

Nichol storm - Thanks for the great site. We had a good laugh. Some of those names are absolutely… odd… and to mess with the spelling of normal names does my head in.

quietman1920… erm… sorry. Nice and normal is okay, but to be the 10th Ann or Cathy in your family makes it a bit troublesome.

noname - How ironic that you should post, eh? Maya is a nice name - always liked that.

Cheers everyone. Keep ‘em comin’!
