Quick! Off the top of your head what's the 2nd largest film industry in the world? (You don't know)

Hooray for Nollywood!

It’s Nollywood, the cinema of Nigeria!

Nollywood rivals Bollywood in film/video production

I did know that. I’ve watched a couple of films on the Nigerian film channel here, and they were pretty good serious dramas.

Meanwhile Australia produces about 20, and nobody watches any of them.

The production values on most of those films stink. It’s a pity because it makes a lot of them unwatchable to me.

Well, quality before quantity. Are there GOOD Nigerian films? I’m not asking to be difficult; I know nothing of the genres of movies, the style, or anything else about them. The story and format of Bollywood is so dramatically different from U.S. pictures, so I have no idea where Nollywood falls into on the map.

Nitpick: Technically, “Bollywood” means specifically Mumbai/Bombay’s Hindi film industry, rather than Indian cinema as a whole. Other major contributors to Indian cinema include the following:

Tollywood, the Telugu-language film industry based in Andhra Pradesh;

Kollywood, the Tamil-language film industry based in Tamil Nadu;

Mollywood, the Malayalam-language film industry based in Kerala; and

Sandalwood, the Kannada-language film industry based in Karnataka.

Each of these produces annually at least one-quarter to one-half the number of feature films produced by the entire US film industry.

Moral: India is a fricking HUGE country, population-wise, and they REALLY like movies. India’s film output, in both sheer volume and linguistic variety, is more comparable to the entire film output of North America and Western Europe than to the film output of the US alone.

Cool beans about the Nigerian movies, though, I did not know that.

I would have guessed, “Porn. No wait. That’s probably first largest.”

Silly!

Everybody knows that Australia is imaginary, like Middle Earth & New Jersey.

I did know this. A year or two ago I watched a short about some guy in Nigeria who produces a film every couple of weeks, signing up random passers-by to appear cheap/for free.

I came in here expecting to see Hollywood as number two.

Probably pretty close to the truth. I’ve got a few Internet acquaintances who have small niche studios (big enough that AVN occasionally tosses an award their way, small enough that you couldn’t reliably find their product in a store) specializing in girl/girl, and they’re releasing 2-3 movies a month or more; I’d not be surprised to see 1000 g/g releases of “feature-length movies” a year, and that’s a small segment of the larger adult video industry, and doesn’t include stuff made for web streaming.

It does make me question what exactly constitutes a “film industry.” From what I understand, most Nigerian movies are direct-to-home-video, while people are only counting Hollywood and Bollywood “major” releases. The OP’s quotes point this out-- they’re counting any video release from a Nigerian source as a film release, while only counting “major releases” from the US and “feature-length films” from Bollywood. A little disingenuous to compare the fields.

I’ve thought that most films coming out of Hollywood were #2 for a long, long time. :smiley:
