Quick question about seeing eye dogs

I tried to find a previous answer to this question but was unable. I’m sorry if this was answered before.
When seeing eye dogs were first being used, were they German Shepards? And if so, why are most seeing eye dogs now Golden Retrievers? Thanks.

  1. I dunno, maybe.

  2. Because they’re large, friendly, intelligent and very easily trainable dogs.

Your machine has proved scientifically that there’s an ancient demon locked within her.

IIRC, The original seeing eye dogs were German Shepherds. Now, you see as many or more Labrador Retrievers as you do Shepherds or Goldens. One reason these breeds are used is that they really really want to please their masters. Therefore, they are relatively easy to train.

If you really want to know the real deal, call The Seeing Eye in Morristown, NJ. Or maybe they have a website. Either way, they are (obviously) the people who would know.

Works for me, thanks.

This appears to be their webpage: http://www.seeingeye.org/

Hey thanks, isn’t it a little weird that someone with the name Kat gave info on seeing eye dogs.

A friend of mine has a blind daughter and she tells me that German Shepards are only used if the owner is able to control such a big dog.

I used to have a hearing ear dog. They get them from the pound. All sorts of breeds depending on what size you’d like.

Seeing eye dogs are usually specificially BRED for the job. And what a job they must do.
