Quick! We need smelling salts! Asuka's got the vapors!

Actually, according to the story the events happened on Sunday night, and on Monday they were admitted to to processing center. Although they did not know they would be selected at the time, in the event they wouldn’t have needed an extra blanket or food, since those would have been provided by the processing/detention center.

Some of the linked articles mentioned that only “slim burritos” were provided in the detention center, so some of the other people waiting were loading up on tacos before entering. So getting a good meal before entering might have been a sensible strategy. And buying a blanket for one night would definitely have been throwing the money away.

“Begging”

For all the compassion the bible shows to beggars, for all of the compassion Christ showed to beggars…

How the Conservative “Christians” vilify and look down on them. :frowning:

Not only that, but assuming that they’d’ve had to take a cab anyway, $20-$30 doesn’t go very far in terms of blankets. Even at Wal-mart and the Dollar store, there’s not much under $20.

Yeah, some people seem to think any request at all is “begging”. Unless they’re doing it, then they’re just asking, but anyone else asks for something it’s “begging”.

Yes, and, Asuka, once your brain has a chance to absorb some oxygen and purge the excess methane, draw up a list of reasonable food options for someone with no access to fixed shelter, cooking, or refrigeration.

Sigh. Then I envy everybody else their digestion.

When I slip “my guy” the occasional $10 outside 7-11 I know he’ll use it for meth or heroin. And I could care less. It doesn’t matter whether it’s for food or drugs, it goes toward his most urgent need of the moment and that’s just fine.

Handouts shouldn’t have stipulations and I’m glad the family enjoyed a night of yummy, filling food. People who have never been poor just don’t get it.

Nah, that just lends credence to the fantasy that there was some kind of rational impulse to the asshattery.

It was purely a mean-spirited, asinine attack with no basis in any sort of reason.

It doesn’t matter one damned whit if there were other reasonable food options and I don’t care a single bit if somebody can contrive some sort of hypothetical. Hiding behind the now thoroughly debunked misconception that the family did anything wrong is a dog whistle. It’s thin cover for the idea that just because somebody is poor or brown or whatever is sufficient reason to require justification for their actions when it’s really nobody else’s damned business.

What if there were other reasonable food options? It doesn’t change a single damned thing. But it gives douchenozzles just enough seemingly rational cover to avoid the appearance of total scum.
