R. E. M.

I like this one the best, although ALL of thier music is good. No, not good. Great. Awesome. The best. With “Man on the Moon”, “Nightswimming”, “Ignoreland”, “Everybody Hurts”, “The Sidewinder Sleeps Tonight”…well, basically, I love every song on that cd. There is no better band out there…a few that come close, but none better.

I love all their albums, but if I had to pick a favorite, it would be Green, if only by default in that it’s the album I listen to most. My favorite song is The One I Love–I know what you’re going to say–Overplayed! But I was in a band for 8 years and that song was our favorite cover. I played drums and sang lead, and the one thing that always got me down deep was the very end, where Peter Buck hits a chord, then moves up a half step, then another. That middle chord kills me. It’s unconventional in the coolest way.

I’m a huge REM fan. I love “Fables of the Reconstruction,” partly because “Can’t Get There From Here” contains my name. (Technically, he’s singing “Tris is sure,” but it really really sounds like my name).

Is there a whole Hindu Love Gods album? I used to have a single by the HLGs. They did a great song called “Narrator” about a kid whose greatest wish is to grow up and become the narrator on the Jacques Cousteau show. It was a hoot!

I never saw a whole album anywhere, though. (Not that I’m doubting you; I would just like to know more about it.)

I was lucky enough to be in Athens in the mid-80’s and to catch a few surprise appearances at clubs around town. If I recall correctly, they did one show under the fake band name Hornets Attack Victor Mature.

I’ve been a serious R.E.M. fan since I picked up Document when I was in, I think, 7th grade. Murmur and Lifes Rich Pageant are my favorites to listen to from beginning to end, although I love most of the albums. I never saw them in concert until the Monster tour, when I got to hear “Country Feedback” and “So. Central Rain” live! I also think New Adventures is great.

However, I hate Up. I cannot listen to it at all. It depresses me to think this is where R.E.M. is going to continue to go.

If you haven’t, read Marcus Gray’s It Crawled from the South. First edition is much better than second.

Oh, sorry for calling you “obsessed,” Spoke. I didn’t stop to consider the negative undertones that word might carry. Perhaps “enthusiastic” would be more appropriate?

As for your EP of “Chronic Town,” where’d you get it, and is it rare at all? I’ll be damned if I didn’t find it in the music section of my local Barnes and Noble.

My vote goes to “Reckoning” (Don’t Go Back to Rockville, So. Central Rain), but I mainly wanted to praise Mr. Cooper for his sig line from Homicide. Best… show… ever…

I got it at Wuxtry Records in Athens, back around '85 or so. I have no idea if it’s rare, but I expect it would be hard to find today. You might try typing “chronic town” and “price” into a search engine to see if that pops up any copies for sale.

I do regret selling my Hindu Love Gods single, as I am sure that is a rare one. What was I thinking?

I have Chronic Town on original cassette. Or at least, I did. I have a nasty feeling it went walkabout when I moved last summer.

In a very brief flirtation with record collecting, I also bought (on vinyl) a fan-club-issue LP called “Blue” and a very old double LP of REM live covering other songs (“In The Year 2525” and so on).

I’ll have a look at my parents house next time I’m there. I might have lost Chronic Town, but the LPs should still be there.

Whoa whoa whoa…you like R.E.M. AND “Homicide”? AND, if that weren’t enough, “Best…show…ever” sounds suspiciously like a SIMPSONS reference, for the love of Shiva H. Vishu!

Um…are you God?

Hey…go to www.angelfire.com/tv/homicideretro. It’s my “Homicide” retrospective. Tell me if you like it, OK?

I DO have “Chronic Town.” “I’ll be damned if I DIDN’T find it in the music section at my local Barnes and Noble.” See, I DID find it there. I have yet to be damned. I need to lay off the quintuple negatives, I know.

I like R.E.M. I think they would make a kick ass Greatest Hits Album. It would be better than a lot of other Greatest Hits Album.

If they have already done this and I live in a cave please let me know

Nike, you live in a cave (sorry!)

There have been at least two attempts at a greatest hits, but neither were recent. IIRC, Eponymous and a plain old Greatest Hits were both around after Green came out.

I’m sure someone else can provide more details.

Spoke: Yep, there is an album, simply called “Hindu Love Gods”. The cover is basically like a plain-brown wrapper. I love their cover of “Raspberry Beret”.

I’m not God, but I do have impeccable taste.

Very cool site. I loved how you focused on the show’s incredible emotional impact, which is what I always pointed to when my friends tried to tell me that “Law and Order” was better. Fools…

You’re a god, not THE God. We’ll just settle on that.

Good to see you like the site. I’ve actually received quite a few hits lately since http://members.aol.com/hlotslinks just yesterday prominently displayed my link.

“Fools,” indeed…

Fans of “Homicide” are definately special people (and not “ride-in-the-short-yellow-school-bus-with-metal-bars-over-the-windows” special, either). That show has really touched a lot of lives, strange as that may sound, and that’s what I’m trying to capture. Thanks for visiting, GG.
