R.I.P. Hal Holbrook

In costume?

I remember him in Midway. “AF has got to be Midway!”

Abe Lincoln, even!

He was the oddball who went to conferences in a bathrobe and said “Isn’t that worth a hot diggety-damn, Admiral?”

I always pictured him at home in later years, long after the war was over:

“Gosh, Gramps! Did you really say that to the Admiral?!?”

“Sure did! And the next day, I found myself on board a PBY headed for Spokane!”

Joe Rochefort wasn’t exactly highly decorated for his code-breaking skills during his lifetime

I was a bit shocked that the NBC Nightly News made no mention of his death. Another legend gone.

That doesn’t surprise me too much, honestly. The network news broadcasts have devolved terribly over the past couple of decades, and are now focused almost exclusively on (a) politics, (b) disasters, and (c) a few very brief human-interest stories at the very end. The death of an actor whom most Americans probably wouldn’t recognize by name (sad, but true), and whose greatest visibility was on the stage, plus TV series and movies which were made 30+ years ago, probably doesn’t make the cut anymore.

Having worked in both publishing and broadcasting, I can assure you that 99.999% of what’s offered as “news” is a pack of carefully chosen and crafted lies, regardless of the source you’re watching or reading.
