R.I.P Johnny Winter

RIP. He was ultimate. I was listening to his “Johnny Winter And” album, and I caught some stuff on it that I hadn’t heard before. I think that the stuff on that was better than Hendrix’s. Of course, it may have been Rick Derringer playing.

Johnny Winter was an incredible blues artist. He’ll be missed.

Johnny Winter recorded, produced and played on Muddy Waters “Hard Again.” That was my gateway crack hit to a lifelong love of the blues. Damn, that was a helluva album.

I can’t find a written interview from way back (maybe in Rolling Stone) where Johnny said the control room was at the bottom of stairs, and Muddy had him running back and forth for the 3 days it took to cut the albumn.

Here’s Johnny reminiscing on the Blue Sky session: http://video.search.yahoo.com/video/play;_ylt=A0SO8xT.tshT7BYAsOhXNyoA;_ylu=X3oDMTB0cWd2NmliBHNlYwNzYwRjb2xvA2dxMQR2dGlkA1ZJUDM2OV8x?p=johnny+winters+interview+on+muddy+waters+hard+again+recording+session&tnr=21&vid=7D8352CC2E90ED18050C7D8352CC2E90ED18050C&l=130&turl=http%3A%2F%2Fts3.mm.bing.net%2Fth%3Fid%3DUN.608050258459625374%26pid%3D15.1&rurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DS59XRE90zxU&sigr=11aoh1fpc&tt=b&tit=Johnny+Winter+-+Muddy+Waters+(5+of+5)&sigt=115l8jj2c&back=http%3A%2F%2Fsearch.yahoo.com%2Fsearch%3Fei%3DUTF-8%26p%3Djohnny%2Bwinters%2Binterview%2Bon%2Bmuddy%2Bwaters%2Bhard%2Bagain%2Brecording%2Bsession%26type%3D888596%26fr%3Dchr-greentree_ie%26ilc%3D12&sigb=14m310l6f

I’m sure you and Muddy and trading licks right now in the blueshouse in the sky. RIP

Mean Town Blues RIP

Yep!

I met him ten or so years ago at the Pittsburgh Blues Festival when it was still at Iron City Brewing’s property. I was helping set up stages and seats, and as a “reward” for my work I was asked to help Mr Winter get from his bus to his stage (about 100 yards). I carried a folding chair and every 20 yards or so I set it up for him to sit and catch his breath. He was a very nice guy and put on a helluva show.

Love that album. I remember the exchange after “Can’t Be Satisfied”: Johnny: “We got that un down, we got it down.” Muddy: Heh, heh, you’re pickin’ your ass off."

Weird to get an email from Ticketmaster for upcoming shows in the DC area. One was for Johnny Winter, at Birchmere I believe. You’d think at would have been edited.

RIP, Johnny. See you somewhere down on Highway 61 one day.

I only saw him once (about four years ago). Probably the best guitar player I’ve ever seen. He made it look so effortless and the sound that came out was amazing.
