Famous French comic book artist, Jean Giraud (AKA as Gir and Moebius among other pseudonyms) has died at 73 (in French). He is better known in the US for is work in Heavy Metal (English adaptation of the French magazine Métal Hurlant, also a founding member of the magazine). His work in French covered everything from westerns (Blueberry) to film (*The Fifth Element and Alien among others).
Oh shit. He was one of my favorites, both in comic art and in design in general. What a loss; I can’t even come up with words to explain how much his work means to me.
I’m going to slowly leaf through “L’Incal” in admiration today.
Oh, damn. Not him.
Don’t worry. I’m sure the Techno Cardinal will find some useful purpose for his remains.
Bloody hell. What a loss. I can’t even estimate how much of my mental landscape contains his imagery.
I have a collection of Heavy Metal magazines in storage, from issue 1 until the '80s or '90s (whenever it was that they changed their format). I always liked his work.
Okay, that’s another piece of my youth gone.
My best recollection of French gives the cause listed in the link as merely ‘after a long illness.’
Me too.
There are very few artists whose work I truly adore. I found most of my faves early in my life and have clung to them unwavering.
Moebius is one of them.
So he’s responsible for the Moebius strip?
(Sorry, humblest apologies)
He gave me one of the most hilarious moments in my years of hanging around comic stores and comicons…
Some dude was going all “oh my gosh you’re the greatest your work is so good and so artistic and so philosophical” and then looked at a pile of books nearby and said “not like this adventures shit”
Giraud looked at the pile of Blueberrys and said “actually, those are mine too. Moebius is an alias, my real name is Jean Giraud.”
Dude slinked the slinkiest I’ve ever seen anybody slinking…
Undoubtedly the reason he chose that alias.
He was also responsible for designing the suits and environmemnt of the original Tron, although that’s just a footnote to his graphic work. The man had a plethora of distinctive visual styles, so that it seemed as if several peopole were doing his work (ust loike Jack Cole)
IIRC he had created some designs for the spacesuits and spaceship in the movie “Alien” as well.
I really loved the two-part Silver Surfer comic he drew back in the day. It’s been years since I’ve read it, but I still remember it fondly.
R.I.P.
Ah… half-informed fanboy tries to suck up the Master’s face, and is personally demolished. Delightful!
Adieu, Jean Gir, and thanks for the awesome visions. I gotta go show some up-n-coming kids your work.
I guess I stepped in an obvious trap, then. (I’m not a comic guy and didn’t know of him.)
