Raccoon Deterrants

Is there a good item out there on sale that is a good Raccoon deterrant on shingle roofing being destroyed?

Any people out there have good experiences with a product or item (like a raccoon head, joke for those in PETA) that worked?

I think they climb the walls of the house to get on the roof, or perhaps use branches on a tree nearby to drop down but getting off would be a problem.

Where do you think it should be sprayed or salted if it’s a particular item or liquid or product. The walls of the house? the property line? Around the trunk of the nearby tree? The roof itself?

when I was a kid we had raccoons under the house, we chased them out, re-patched the grates they’d use to get in, and then sprayed ammonia around the grates to keep them from coming back. Seem to work pretty well.

You’d want to spray it around where the come onto the roof, I’d think. Maybe where the tree connects to the roof? Or around the tree itself? I dunno about that, really, but ammonia would be a cheap thing to try and it worked for us

I read someone used Pine Sol and it worked great. Just trying to see if there’s a better solution, better meaning cheaper, lol.

I think the best place to spray would be the trunk of tree, walls and roof, just to make sure. It’s the smell that drives them away, I don’t want to make the neighbourhood dogs sick if i spray on the tree though.

I’ve had raccoons in the attic. There was no nearby trees to climb to get to the roof, the obvious point of entry.

So I asked the pest control person that came and he said they will climb the water spouts from your rain gutters.

So don’t limit yourself to treating the trees.

What was done is secure the roof vents to prevent further entry.
