Race and Tipping

Which parts of Europe are you talking about?

Sounds alien to me. Granted, serving staff is paid better in Europe than their US counterparts, but tipping is still mostly expected in restaurants and bars. The degree to which one tips might vary per country, and a “US style” 20% tip would be considered generous anywhere in Europe, but still, I can’t imagine a place in Europe where a waiter would act offended at a 50% tip. They might be offended by something else (perceived attitude, whatever), but I’m unaware of any local attitude that equates tips with insults.

I’m black and I don’t tip for crap!!!

I kid…I kid…

At least 20% if you’re polite and don’t spit in my food…

You’d have to do something really bad for me to leave 15% or lower…like something beyond the server’s control…beyond bad food.

I’ve had bad service, rude servers, dirty utensils, etc, but have never NOT tipped anyone.

Tipping was what I was taught to do, as I assume most people are. I do know a LOT of other black people who have no qualms with NOT tipping and some who actually refuse to tip…never thought to ask why, I just assumed it was because they were rude…or, you know, saving up for that Yanni CD.
