Rachel Jeantel accepts offer to attend college.

That’s not what happened. At all.

Did you even read the article? I find it hilarious and sad that the people who think Ms. Jeantel is too dumb to attend college (based on what? She speaks with an accent?) have posts full of misspellings and clearly haven’t even read about what is happening. Ignorance indeed…

With all due respect specifically what did she say that struck you “very smart”? She could barely even comprehend the questions.

I was going to say this earlier, but it was going to be a joke about how some people have no idea what racism is. Thank you for making that unnecessary, I guess. I haven’t really followed this case as it relates to Rachel Jeantel, but I hope she makes the most of this opportunity.

The dumbest thing I heard her say was “grown up attorneys made me nervous”. 1. Since attorneys have to go to college followed by law school arent they all “grown ups” by that time? 2. The aforementioned comment also showed she lacked an understanding of what a defense attorney is supposed to do to witnesses for the prosecution. Even though I am 100% in agreeance with what Trayvon forced Zimmerman to do I think it was a travesty for the prosection that she was even allowed to testify. Her interviews demonstrate she lacked the intelligence to understand and appreciate the proceedings of the court.

Why do you think “black colleges” exist?

The historical black colleges accept white students and hire white faculty too. But they are predominantly black. These colleges are still relevant because they focus equally on nurturing and challenging black students. Their goal is to bring more black professionals into the workplace and society.

It may not be necessary for most black students. They do fine in a regular university. But I’m glad the choice is available. Some black students may thrive under the tutelage of a black faculty. It’s entirely the student’s choice.

Tom Joyner is offering his own money to tutor Jeantel and get her through college. So he certainly can put conditions on where she goes. She can turn him down if she wants. It’s her choice.

That seems a bit broad; something tells me that Berkeley is a little tougher than Morehouse.

In case anyone is confused, “Black Colleges” do not and never have turned away white students or faculty. It was all the other colleges that turned away blacks. So “Black Colleges” were really integrated colleges, regular collages were segregated White Colleges. It’s true that very few white people actually attended black colleges, but that’s because of, you know, racism. Today white people attend black colleges, but the student body remains mostly black because most of the students who want to attend are black.

Possibly, but to be honest, the above describes a lot of incoming freshmen. I taught at a Big 10 school for a while; I had students who didn’t come off as any more intelligent than Rachel Jeantel.

I disagree.
And that’s as far as I feel like discussing this with someone like you.

It’s simply amazing the dumb things people say, and their inability to demonstrate intelligence. Simply amazing.

I am 100% in agreeance with this.

I haven’t followed the trial or the controversy over her appearance, nor have I heard or seen any clips of her testimony or subsequent statements, but if I had to guess her meaning of this statement, judging from her age, it seems fairly clear. Attorneys that deal with grown-ups and grown-up matters are what make her nervous, as opposed to attorneys who deal with juvenile transgressions and who are probably better at explaining things to and dealing with juvenile clients. Therefore, it is not that the attorneys are grownups, but deal with grown up clients.

I suppose I’ll echo the question then. What powers of cognition did this youth demonstrate that would have you call her “smart”? Even someone as apathetic towards this case as myself could see that she was disrespectful, rude and not particularly bright.

At the very least I certainly hope she gets a lot of tutoring before attempting college level classes of any kind. It would be sad if she gets there and then flunks out for lack of preparation.

And how many languages do you speak?

Look, I’ll be frank. I never saw any indication of this, and I think people who say she’s stupid are judging her by her dialect, or maybe her youth or her size. In other words, I think it’s prejudice. I think she was (rightfully) contemptuous of the questioning at the trial. I mark that as evidence of her intelligence, personally.
