Racial equality: Which country is better the US or the UK?

I just wanted to know if racial equality is better in the united states or the united Kingdom, I can’t make up my mind, the US has improved remarkably the racial situation in the past 30 years for blacks and the united kingdom has followed. The best equality that the united kindom has achieved is that we have Muslim MPs muslims in the house of lords and counsillors also we have a black politician in the cabinet . We have the highest number of mixed marriages in Europe.
The United States has a black senators mayors judges people in the army have a lot of black captains and admirals. Does the united kingdom have better debates about racial equality or does the US?

You’re asking two separate questions.

  1. Which country has a higher percentage of “persons of color” in high positions?

You sound like you’re equating “a higher percentage of persons of color in high positions” with “better”.

And…
2. Which country has better debates about racial equality?

IMO both countries are about the same in terms of debates on racial equality, in that nobody’s really happy.

I will also point out that, over here at least, “Muslim” doesn’t usually equal “black”, or even “person of color”. “Muslim” tends to be a religious designation, rather than a “skin color” designation. So what exactly are you talking about when you’re referring to “racial equality”? Equality between which races? “Mixed marriages” can mean almost anything, so “mixed” how?

Ok sorry NO OFFENCE INTENDED: Whats country has better race relations UK or US. Damn I knew I would do something to upset someone but I guess it comes with the territory. Sorry if I sound like an ass.

Oh geez, thats a question loaded with Plutonium.

Again I sounded like an ass. Forget the post. lets just let it die eh? Bad thing to do when I’m a newbie!

Since the thread is still alive I might as well add this. “Muslim” wasn’t the most lucid word to use in that context, since as we know Muslims can be any race. However, there are two Muslim MPs in the UK parliament, both of whom happen to be of South Asian origin (* below).

The full list of non-white MPs in the UK parliament is:[ul][li]Diane Abbott - b Paddington, London, of Jamaican parents. Labour[/li][li]Paul Boateng - b Hackney, London, of Ghanaian parents. Cabinet Minister. Labour[/li][li]Parmjit Dhanda - b London (of Indian parents?). Labour[/li][li]Mark Hendrick - b Salford, Lancashire. Can’t find much biographic info online, but he’s of South Asian origin. Labour[/li][li]Piara Khabra - b Punjab, India. Labour[/li][li]Oona King - b Sheffield, S Yorkshire to a Jewish mother and African-American father (civil rights activist, Preston King). Labour[/li][li]Dr Ashok Kumar - b Hardwar, India. Labour[/li][li]David Lammy - b Tottenham, London (African parents?). Junior Cabinet Minister. Labour[/li][li]Khalid Mahmood* - b Kashmir. Labour[/li][li]Mohammad Sarwar* - Faisalabad, Pakistan. Labour[/li][li]Marsha Singh - b India. Labour[/li]Keith Vaz - b Aden, Yemen. Former Cabinet Minister. Labour[/ul]So that’s 12 from a total of 650. If the total reflected the racial mix of the country there would be between 55 and 60 names on that list.

Is Oona King really from Sheffield? She doesn’t sound like it. She’d be better if she did.

Oh,Britain may not be the best comparison to the US, but Britain compared to Europe?

In the US we don’t really like to talk about racial equality, we just like to make jokes about white people.
I would almost definately say that the UK is better off, the outside world doesn’t seem like a vague place in the UK like it does in the US. Of course there will always be room for improvement.

You can’t hear her ordering a pint of Wards in the Stone House can you? Maybe she was brought up in Ranmoor or Broomhill? I checked a bit more of her biog and found that she went to school in Chalk Farm down here in the smoke, and got a politics degree jointly from York University and the University of California, Berkley, so maybe she didn’t spend much time in Sheffield. Still, she could’ve turned out like Seb Coe.

Given the thread title, it’ll only be by chance that people with continental European experience have much to say here, but I do recall discussions before about the role of the political right in Britain versus that over the Channel, which produced some varied opinions.

Notwithstanding the hammering the far right took in Austria this week, and the false impression created by apparent “support for right-wingers” in France and Holland, there does seem to be a smaller presence for far right and racist political organisations in the UK than lots of other places.

You don’t sound like an ass, Ryan, sorry if it sounded like that’s what I was saying, 'cause I wasn’t. Just trying to get the OP clarified a bit, is all.

Trust me–when you really do sound like an ass, the Teeming Millions will let you know.

In words of one syllable.

Thanks duck duck!

It seems to me that the question should be “everything else being equal, which country is best when it come to racial equality?” Trouble is that everything else isn’t equal. For instance, our population is much larger, so comparing numbers would be unfair to the UK. Another is the fact that where I live there are few Latinos, Asians, Native Americans, but we have a large number of Blacks. In New Mexico there are numerous Latinos and Native Americans, but few Blacks or Asians. The size of the UK means that all the different races are much closer and therefore more familiar to each other. So if I were looking for racial diversity, I’d probably migrate to the UK.

 [sup]But then there is the question of weather[/sup]

Hey! The weather takes some getting used to.

Ryan, isn’t this the second time today that you have described yourself as an ass? Ease up on yourself! Really, you seem just fine in your comments.

This is only anecdotal, but I’ve heard from several black and Asian American friends that have spent time in the UK (specifically, I should say, in England) that they were shocked by the amount of open racism they encountered - far in excess of what they would experience within a comparable time period in the States, apparently.

Female, black and Jewish? Who can beat that?

Surely, it’s impossible to measure “racism” objectively or quantify it meaningfully, so as with ruadh’s case, it’s probably anecdotal or nothing.

What I’ve heard from US blacks is that they get “looked at” more in the UK, possibly because they were in areas with relatively small non-white populations. They also say people semed “nervous” of them. But I’ve often been surprised at the number of mixed couples you see in the UK, usually black and white, complete with kids. That’s relatively unusual in much of the US.

So, I suspect that the differences are greater between different neghborhoods within either country than between the countries as a whole.

I’ve also heard from an Indian that in the UK, non-whites who speak with a very up-market, cultured British accent get more respectful treatment from whites than their less-loquacious bretheren.

I have never been outside of the US anywhere accept of course the one occasion in tiajuana, Mexico and ran thru the alaska/canadian highway to get home to Alaska.

SO i cant speak for europe. I can say that in the united states its a melting pot of races and religions.

My father use to tell me that our next war here will be civil and it will be among the militia/white supremist/and government martial strategy. Since the riots over rodney king i can officially say hes probably right. Coming from a man who has served this country overseas and here.

I see it building everyday with the militia stock pilling weapons and government raids. i didnt understand what he said before but as an adult i do now. I turn on the tv and mostly what I am seeing is a separation of this country with the black entertainment channel and the spanish channel . which was not founded to be little italy on one corner and little tokyo on the other.....and of course the latin worlds and blacks and jewish......etc etc.. i think america is in a state of confusion and evloving into I dont know what.

I enjoy the spread of cultures here to be honest I wouldnt want to live with a bunch of uptight hard headed whites (my family resembles this to a tee). But it is becoming hotter and hotter here with the issues. The legal system is just about as stumped by what to do with all the law suits and finger pointing. Its ridiculous. Funy they say that in the bible god made different races to confuse each other or something like that. But then again god (whom or whatever that might be) also made us strong and competitive and prideful. a triple combination of self destruction.

Taboo

i just think there are distinct differences betwwen the way the different races react to each other in the uk and us. ive been to the us many times. in most cases when i have spoken to coloureds they seem very taken back by the fact that ive spoken to them, almost like its not the normal thing to do, i think theres more segregation allong racial grounds in the US
