Radar detectors are illegal!

To me, it’s completely unlike that. I’ll refer to governmental and quasi-governmental bodies – and indeed any, non-human entity – how I wish. Agencies aren’t entitled to have hurt feelings.

Matters of style are a prerogative of the writer or the publisher, not of the subject of a work.

It very well could be. There’s no reason to capitalize “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.” It’s not a proper noun. So there’s no real reason to capitalize “sids” either.

Speaking from a non-intellectual point of view, I’d (slightly) prefer to see all acronyms (except those which have become words) typed in all caps, simply because doing so draws attention to the source of the acronym.
So; AIDS, SIDS, NASA, IMHO, SCOTUS etc all work for me.
And so do scuba, radar, laser and the like.
BTW; is CONUS an acronym?

It’s easy. Buy an old unit on Ebay. Make sure it’s K-band as most false alarms are on X-band and the fuzzbuster crowd all but ignores X-band warnings (unless they live in an area where X-band is still being used by the police. Very rare). You can install it behind the grill of your car like a remote radar detector is, having the control piece in the drivers compartment. Or just get a hand held unit that plugs into the cigarette lighter socket.

You can even make a GAME of it. :stuck_out_tongue:

I don’t know the legalities of this. When I first got into law enforcement in the early 80’s we had to have a special license from the FCC to run radar (this was seperate from the training certification we had to have). They did away with that requirement for us, I don’t know about the general public.

I suppose screwing with someones radio receiver may be some kind of FCC violation.

Well! I certainly learned a lot from this thread, considering it’s humble beginnings.
Not only did I learn that I can have a radar detector if I wish (I don’t), but I also learned a considerable lesson about writing style (which I’ll likely ignore).
Thanks to all.
Peace,
