Radio dramas on YouTube

I have become mildly addicted to radio dramas (not audiobooks, not soundtracks from TV shows) on YouTube. Since they are audio only, there is nothing to look at, so that part is a bit tedious, but there are some wonderful stories. I’m partial to mysteries, and my favorite series at the moment is the Charles Paris mysteries adapted from the books by Simon Brett, and I think that is only because Bill Nighy is so deliciously on point for the skilled but under-employed and rather seedy actor.

My favorite channels at the moment are Chesterton Radio and Just Me Again. They both have episodes of BBC Radio 4 Saturday Night Theater, which goes back to the 40’s and up to the 80’s, as well as lots of other stuff. I can’t abide the American shows they broadcast because of the endless embedded commercials, which is too bad, because some of them have well known actors in them. So BBC it is, and if I can understand the accents and the story is in my wheelhouse, so to speak, I’m in for 1-2 hours of listening delight.

I suspect this is a fairly narrow audience here on the Dope, but surprise me and tell me that you listen to some kind of radio drama too.

I caught part of a c. 1947 radio drama on my car’s Sirius XM recently — some household crime mystery. My 10-year-old son and I enjoyed it for a bit. Here’s info on the programs on that channel — you may appreciate that this stuff is likely finding a new audience.

(Linguist John McWhorter must listen to a lot of these, too, for some of his examples of language change.)

You could try the BBC website and BBC Sounds phone app. I know people overseas can listen to their live radio over the internet, so maybe it’s possible to access their radio archives as well.

Or there’s https://archive.org/details/folksoundomy_bbcradio

Thanks, I’ll check those out.

May I suggest archive.org?

Is the page specifically for BBC radio shows, and I’ve download the classic Hitchiker’s Guide for playback on long drives, Fear on 4 for creepy fun, or their Lord of the Rings production for an evening of fun. And I always enjoy ‘The Shadow’ classic radio show [ although that’s not on the BBC page of course].

ETA - I prefer this over youtube in that it’s easier for me to download ahead of time and build playlists, not that there is anything wrong with youtube. Just normally easier for me to organize for ‘on-the-go’ options.

Thanks, although I’m not on-the-go that much, but it sounds like a good source for radio shows.

BBC Radio 3 also does drama:
