Rage Against Rage Against the Machine

Karma, who are some of your favorite bands?

Karma, let me hijack a minute here. There are very few posters, if any, who can be this much of an asshole and I still enjoy their posts their and respect their opinions (not that that should mean jack shit to you, but just FYI.)

So just out of curiosity, who do you like? Name 5. You slam every band/musician that everyone brings up.

Well any kind of superlative like that is a compliment… I guess… but I have to say that I didn’t slam EVERY band. I agreed with several posters.

But for 5 that I do like, let’s go for:

Dave Matthews (on topic)
Ani DiFranco (oops! Political. Forgot to mention that)
The Cure
Tori Amos
Radiohead
Ben Harper
Bjork

There are seven. Fire away.

Oh Jesus… I just realized that I put “Mexican’s” as the plural of “Mexican”. Mea culpa! Mea maxima culpa!

Karma, you have good taste in music…

And as a minor nitpick - Harvard doesn’t offer a Political Science degree. What’s called “Political Science” everywhere else is called “Government” at Harvard… But the guy really is an alum.

In reference to the OP -

I don’t have any problem with their music or similar types of music - while I don’t listen to it very often, I think bands like Korn and RATM and Limp Bizkit and NIN sometimes have very recognizable and entertaining music - it’s fun music to listen to while playing sports or working out - tunes and the melodies are good.

Unfortunately, it’s the whole “act” that these bands bands try and put on that turns me off, and even moreso it’s the whole counter-culture teen attitude shit that seems to pervade these groups. Encouraging a bunch of kids at Woodstock to “rip and destroy” isn’t a political message - it’s just stupid irresponsible attention grabbing.

Personally, I fucking HATE the whole RATM message, because I think the whole cyncism thing is a crock of shit. It’s very easy to be critical and cry about it on a CD or in a benefit concert - it’s much harder to be critical and then try and enact real legitimate change from within. And then the whole shit act that they try and put on about how the US is the real Evil Empire is just plain bullshit hokey crap, imho.

Really no firing from me. OK, minimal firing. I think Ani is pretty fucking annoying–not since Fugazi has anyone been so “SEE HOW INDEPENDANT I AM? SEE? SEE?” ad nauseum. Tori Amos–makes me grow breasts, she exudes more estrogen than allowed by law. But can’t argue either of their songwriting skills.

So, In fairness, fire away on me:

Tom Waits
PJ Harvey
Built to Spill
Gomez
Morphine
Three Mile Pilot
Tortoise

Actually no firing here. The only one of those that I really know is PJ Harvey, who gets my approval. However, I think that you’re way off on Tori Amos. I think Ani, S. McLachlan, Jewel, and a collection of sundry crap artists are the real fighters on that front. Most of her stuff isn’t really the <RRRGH! OVULATE> type thing, IMO. In fact, I would put her pretty close to PJH, though you may not appreciate that.

Also on Ani D. I think you’re a bit off. The media plays up her independence (particularly the business side of it) far more than Ani likes. She detests being known as a businesswoman, but aside from that I can understand how her ‘roaring’ can rub people the wrong way.

There’s a difference between contributing songs for feel-good celebrity causes and actually basing your songs on the causes you believe in.

BTW, great taste in music, Karma! I’m a huge fan of Tori myself. Her songwriting, piano playing, incredible voice, and utter genius could run laps around any of the other musicians listed in this thread.

Since when is that a pre-requisite for the Pit? I guess bullshit topics like “I don’t like this band” deserve more deep thought, huh? Don’t be such a fucking prick.

I will agree with you on Radiohead, though. Amazing.

Don’t put on such a double standard and say that MY comment was out of line. It was a borderline flame, and was not inappropriate for the Pit. Try not to be such a hypocrite. Like I said, think before you speak.

Jeez, I thought I’d get a little more disgust than this for my taste in music! I’m still waiting for that DMB guy, though.

Now, where is the fun in that?

Somehow I knew that was going to be screwed up. Jeez. I think I’ve done enough here. I think I’ll go listen to “Voice of the Voiceless” and wonder what the hell they’re talking about.

First off, I’d like to clarify. My original statement was about Dave Mathews, not his band. I made specifically sure to NOT mention the band, as I consider them to be a group of fairly, or perhaps (for some of them) VERY talented musicians.

I draw the line at Dave himself, though. He can’t sing, managed to physically nauseate me with his cover of “All Along the Watchtower,” and is, in my opinion, a very weak song writer. However, as is the case in all musical situations, this is certainly a matter of opinion. I just happen to beleive that my opinion is better than yours

Truth does not change because it is, or is not, beleived by a majority of the people.

Ooh…MouthBreather: Just read that you’re a Morphine fan. Good call. Yes was an absolutely AMAZING album. Most of their earlier stuff was great, too…too bad Like Swimming was kinda weak.

I think Dave is a good (not amazing) songwriter, and the singing is a matter of taste, really. Good thing you stayed away from the band!

Jeez, this is unbearable! What happend to the irate comments about RATM? This doesn’t even belong in the pit!

Well, in the spirit of the pit, let me say that Yes sucks a horse’s ass. By far their worst.

(although, Good, Cure for Pain, and The Night all kick much ass.)

A bit about the old guitarsmith:

He’s a smart, politically active guy, and even though I hate 99% of his leftist pinko ideas I REALLY dig his guitar playing and live performance.

Now to bring this back to the Pit, proper.

Karma has no right to be knocking Rage when his interests are:
Dave Matthews - :frowning: average musician, poor songwriter, good catchy pop pablum
Ani DiFranco - :frowning: I was tired of this crap in the 80s
The Cure -
Tori Amos - She’s a pretty damn good singer, songwriter and musician. . .too bad her lyrics sound like they were written by a sorority girl.
Radiohead - :frowning: More pop crap
Ben Harper -
Bjork - I’ve only heard three of her songs - one was great, the other two we junk. Cool videos, though.

Rage is a powerful, talented band that actually donates millions of dollars to causes they believe in - what exactly are you criticizing?

I think the band emits a bit too much testosterone for some of you guys. They are so very threatening with their jumping around, their “black” rapping, their “penises” and their loud distorted amplifiers.

Settle down with a good tea and pop in the latest PJ Harvey disc and give your feminine side a great big hug!

Traveling Mountebanks + Mental Institutions always = fun!

Yes Karma, the bands that you have listed as your favorite bands are all very soft… do you like anything harder? Something that can at least be compared to RATM?

Well, isn’t this interesting. “Your tastes in music suck, 'cause they don’t agree with mine!” Well, I thought this was all kinda petty and stupid (Of course, it is in the Pit), until someone insulted Nine Inch Nails. Suddenly, I understood the RATM fans’ outrage. This person (forgot who it was, sorry, and I’m honestly too lazy to check) lumped NIN in with Rage, Korn, and Limp Dick (Oh, excuse me, Bizkit). I’m sorry, but no. Trent Reznor makes music with many levels and nuances. The other bands make single-minded noise. Granted, some of the NIN hits, such as “Head Like a Hole” or the upcoming “Starfuckers, Inc.” are a straight on audio assault, but if you’ve ever listened to a NIN album, there is a wide variety of musical textures present. It’s not the happiest music in the world, but it is not as bland and cookie-cuttery as most of the shit on the radio today.

Now, as for Rage, I personally prefer Korn, but I’m not what I’d call a “fan” of either group. However, half-hearted politics have no place in today’s popular music. Rage talks about how coroporations are bad and how capitalism is killing society, and then goes and sucks Carson Daly’s ass to sell records. They’re hiprocrites, just as bad as the protestors in DC who called for the end to corporate dominance, until it started to rain. Then they took refuge inside a Starbucks. Sigh…

How about from a kid who’s holding a job, studied politics, and balances his checkbook every month? Oh, and since when are the former and the latter three qualifications for holding a political opinion?

Oh, and by the way, I don’t remember Carter. If I hadn’t just been born then, I’d remember Pierre Trudeau.
