So they are showing ROTLA today. I love Indiana Jones, but one thing that has always bothered me about ROTLA is how do the Germans have a military presence in Egypt during the mid 1930’s? If I remember my Egyptian history correctly, although Egypt became nominally independent in the 1920’s, England still had a huge amount of control over Egypt, including occupation of the Canal Zone. Given this I can’t imagine that England would be happy with German agents operating with impunity in the country, never mind having an actual military base like we see in ROTLA. Am I missing something, or is the movie just playing fast and loose with history?
Bingo. Never mind the Germans having a (heavily armed) archeological dig in Egypt, there’s no way they had a fully equipped submarine base in the Mediterranean.
It played fast and lose with a lot of things. We talked a lot about it in the recent plot hole thread. Also add to that the non existent flying wing. Indy with a RPG before they were invented. Germans running around with MP40s in 1936 when they weren’t fielded until 1940 (the name is a hint).
Doesn’t keep me from loving the movie.
To be fair, I’m sure the source material (serials from the 1930s and 40s) took liberties, too. I mean, when’s the last time you saw a singing cowboy?
Surprisingly, the Ark actually did melt the faces off Nazis.
Rustler’s Rhapsody (1985).
