Rainy day movies

I’m rained out of work today (and possibly tomorrow, too), and I need some suggestions for a good couple of rainy day movies to pass some time.

My genre faves are suspense, sci-fi (both good and bad), action/adventure, comedy/drama, maybe even something deep and heavy for one of the flicks.

Please don’t just give titles, add some comment to them. Without spoilers, of course.

Thanks in advance and suggest away.

Just noticed the weather map and it does look like a wet day in your area. We need rain here.

As for movies, how long has it been since you spent the day watching The Godfather – all three of them?

The only DVD’s I have that would make me happy as I killed a day with them, especially a rainy one, would either be those or Heat with DeNiro and Pacino.

Something makes me think Blade Runner might not work. Same for Waterworld.

If I could rent* a copy of Bladerunner on DVD that isn’t the director’s cut, I would probably have just done it. (I think the narration is essential for the proper noir feel of the film)
I really enjoyed GFII but not the others so much. That just might make the list today.

*no web based things, just what I have available in OKC, namely Blockbuster and Hollywood, neither of which had the version I like in stock locally on DVD, just VHS. Yeah, I just looked again a couple of weeks ago.

III sucks, but I & II are amazing – esp. the interedited version of the two of them.

Or, you could do a nice little noir festival – The Postman Always Rings Twice, Double Indemnity, Maltese Falcon, etc. (see either of the two recent noir threads for ideas).

Screwball comedies: Ball of Fire, Bringing up Baby, My Man Godfrey.

Pan’s Labyrinth: Deep & Heavy with some Fantasy thrown in. A little girl in WWII era Spain finds fairies and a faun at her new step-father’s military camp. Some of the scariest, weirdest monsters I’ve ever seen in a movie, coupled with a sad-but-wonderful story and great acting. It’s in Spanish, so expect subtitles. A beautiful movie.

I’ll second that…Or you could have a Tolkein Marathon and watch all three movies in succession.

Ooh! Athena’s suggestion is definitely on my list to look for.

I like the noir festival idea, too. Those movies were a little shorter than most of todays, so I could double up.

I’ll check back in a little bit before I go out for errands and the VDO store run, see what else suggested strikes my fancy.

Rainy day here too. But I’m home today because I’m having Oral Surgery in about 3 hours. Was considering for myself;

Serenity Scifi action.

Team America: World Police Some silly action comedy with puppets.

Blackadder I have the complete collector’s set, so I can pick and chose episodes.

Galaxy Quest

There’s a lot of silly fun/bad movies that I’d consider, but have watched in the last couple of months, such as Big Trouble in Little China, I’m Gonna Get You Sucka, Shaun of the Dead and The Last Dragon.

Some of my favorites:

**Forbidden Planet
Day of the Jackal

Flight of the Phoenix

The Last of Sheila

Charade

A Man for All Seasons**
Get the originals – don’t watch The Jackal or the retitled awful remake of Charade or the remade Phoenix . Even the Charlton Heston version of Man for All Seasons is inferior to Paul Scofield’s.

I can endorse The Day of the Jackal and support not bothering with The Jackal. The original may be the best movie of its kind, where the audience learns things at just the right moment to keep the suspense and drama at its height. I read the book (I forget whether before or after seeing the movie) and it’s one of the most faithful book/movie adaptations yet. Other Forsyth books didn’t do as well. How could they? You don’t improve on perfection.

Have you considered conducting your own private Alfred Hitchcock festival?

All are great suggestions, thanks!

I may get more tomorrow depending on the weather but I’m off to get Pan’s Labyrinth and The Day of the Jackal for right now. If either of those are unavailable, I’ll be looking at the classic sci-fi and film noir to fill in.

Again, all were great suggestions.

It rained the other Sunday afternoon so I sat down and watched the complete 5 hrs and 50 minutes Smiley’s People, starring Alec Guinness. This must be about the sixth time I have watched this film. Still comes out fresh.

Whenever Beetlejuice comes on TV, I always watch. It’s beautiful, funny, and has a happy ending! Same thing goes for Edward Scissorhands (except maybe that last bit).

I recommend just about anything that turns up on American Movie Classics, although it bewilders me there are movie classics made during my lifetime. Insomnia woke me up a few hours before dawn one recent Saturday. I channel-surfed to AMC and got caught up in The Razor’s Edge with Tyrone Powers and Gene Tierney. The dialogue was crisp and the plot unfolded meticulously with plenty of irony and foreshadowing.

One Sunday morning during a raging blizzard, I curled up in an armchair under a blanket, and watched Sense and Sensibility on AMC. Against all expectations, it riveted my attention. A superb period piece drama.

On rainy days when the meteorology equates metaphorically with my mood, I revisit guilty favorites: Mahogany, The Last Dragon, and On A Clear Day You Can See Forever. I have decided to woo any man or woman who feels as strongly about these three movies as I do. This is why I am still single. In any case, I recommend you wallow in your own guilty pleasures when the rain beats on your window panes.

One more recommendation: Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. This movie rewards a long attention span.

Get The Fountain. Superb acting, incredible script and the movie is so beautiful. Almost any scene would be poster-worthy.

It’s definitely a thinker, though.
