I’ve been hearing a lot lately about these drug wars south of the border (I’m a US citizen), such as in Mexico and Columbia. A lot of these cartels’ funding is coming from drug money in the US. So, as a gesture to help patch up old wounds still existing from the Bad Neighbor Policy and maybe in the interest of the government actually doing something that will help the nation, should the penalties for doping be raised? For instance, raise the penalty for possession from a misdemeanor to something higher? Maybe even a felony, but not sure how the Congress would take to that.
Please, we are just finally getting marijuana possession decriminalized for those of us who would like to use it for medication … please don’t start putting us back in prison.
If it is legalized, then the dope smugglers from south of the border will have to find some other way to make money, just like the mob post prohibition.
We can’t afford the drug laws we already have. Building more prisons and cutting education funding has been going on for the last few decades. It doesn’t work.
It’s a terrible idea that would only make the drug trade more profitable. It’s an attractive area of crime because drugs are expensive, and they’re expensive because they’re illegal. The stricter the penalties, the greater the money. Chupacabras also wrongly believes the federal government controls all drug laws. The government gets involved in breaking up drug rings and importation, but things like possession are handled at the state level. You’d need to get all the states together, which isn’t going to happen.
