So I got a job offer in Durham, NC, which I’m planning to accept (WOOHOO!). Which will require moving (kinda sucks, cause I love ATL, but NC is where I keep saying “Man, I shoulda moved there!”).
I’m looking for good info sites, places to find rentals, general information about how much NC rocks, etc. I know about Triangle.com and Rent.net, but I figure there’s some local sites with good info that I don’t know about.
Lucky dog. Mrs Magill and I moved from Raleigh to Atlanta a year and a half ago. I really much preferred Raleigh. BTW, it’s either Raleigh or Durham. Raleigh-Durham is the airport.
If you’ll be working in RTP, you would probably want to live in Raleigh. Raleigh Rental was a pretty good place to find a rental property.
If you’re looking for a fun scene, check out Alive after Five. It’s a fun bi-weekly free concert series in downtown Raleigh. I would also check out Raleigh Little Theatre. Volunteering there is a great way to meet people.
Good bar: Tir na Nog. Villiage Brew House opened after we moved, but my sister gives it rave reviews.
I’ve sent a link to this thread to UncleBill, since he went to Duke, and one of his sisters lives in Durham. I’ve only visited once, but really liked the town, so I think you’ll like it there.
I have a friend here in Ohio who has a daughter living in Cary. When he comes home from visiting, he knows to bring me three POUNDS of ALLEN and Son pulled pork. I make my own Eastern Carolina finishing sauce, thank you.
I lived in Durham for 4 years. But I assume that things have changed since 1967-71.
Thanks, guys and girls, especially for the barbeque link. I was also delighted to find that leaving Atlanta doesn’t mean having to live without tasty Mellow Mushroom pizza.
The apartment issue is probably settled. The company I’ll be working for has a deal with a complex that’s about a mile away. $600ish/month for an 800 sq. ft one bedroom (which is about what we’re paying for a 600 sq. footer here). And looking at the floorplan, it has a nice, open kitchen, which was our biggest want. I’ll be going up to visit the place and apply, but if it’s not a total dump, that’s where we’ll be moving.
Welcome to the area! If you’re going to be here this weekend, check out the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. It’s the largest documentary film festival in North America.
Other upcoming fun includes the Festival for the Eno on 4th of July. Great bands, food and fun in a beautiful natural setting.
A lot of local social life centers around college sports, especially basketball.
Another great thing about this area is convenient beach and mountain weekend getaways.
It’s a nice area. Their traffic is nothing compared to 285/575/75.
And if you happen to bump into some of the Duke or UNC folks please be gracious and at least try to pretend that their opinions are important. We all realize that State is the only real school in the area, but we do not want to rub that in the noses of the disadvantaged.
Nice Price Books and Readers’ Corner on Hillsbrough St. in Raleigh.
If you decide you don’t like the apartment, DO NOT move to Chapel Hill. I think they put something in the water there. Also, as a recent transplant told me. “It’s so West Coast… five years ago.”
Carcosa - I like you. (Go Pack - Carolina Sucks!)
GMRyujin - One more bit of culture shock, the enitre region will shut down every March for the ACC Tournament.
I’ve lived in Durham a couple of years, and grew up in Chapel Hill. It’s a pretty great area – no Asheville, but pretty great anyway :).
Some of my favorite places:
-Cosmic Cantina is the place to go for the best local burritos (as of four years ago, anyway)
-The Regulator is a great independent bookstore.
-Blue Nile has some mighty fine Ethiopian foods.
-The Durham Public Library is the best public library of any city I’ve ever lived in.
-If you ever make it to Chapel Hill, check out Pepper’s Pizza: it’s what Mellow Mushroom wishes it could be.
-Get a local to take you on some of the better hikes through Duke Forest, and make sure you get out to the Duke Botanical Gardens. Both are lovely.
It is a great deal for us. Decent salary for the area (plus a decent raise and bennies package after 90 days), the company looks solid to me, and I’ll be doing cool stuff. Morelin can get back into EMTing, which she much prefers to retail.
We’ll be moving sometime in May, we haven’t set a date yet. Probably around mid-May, since I start on the 24th.
We’ll have to have another get together, so we can dodge you one more time, Archergal
