Is there a way to test the RAM in my G5 iMac? “About this Mac” says I have my expected 2 GB, but sometimes the computer runs slow. I’ll do something simple, like click search in wiki, and the little rotating flower will come up and stay forever.
Also, if I force quit, the window will say “Safari not responding”. The problem is intermittant, which is always great when trouble shooting.
Should I suspect Safari?
I spent some time in xash’s excellent how to thread, but with our stoopid search limitations it takes forever.
Thanks.

The symptoms you describe do not look like faulty memory.
The first thing to test for is, does the slowness come from your machine or outside? That is, is it also slow working on documents on your local hard disk, or just on the web? If the latter the problem is almost certainly in your internet connection (ie between your Mac and your ISP) not in your Mac.
Also, when did this problem start? What changes in the period immediately before the onset of the slowness? New ISP, router, move of house?
What Mac OS X and Safari versions? Since going to 4.0.1 I’ve not had any Safari crashes.
I’m not sure what kind of Processor you have Memtest86 tests for Mac using Intel
Some programs are more heavily dependent than others. For instance, if you’re ripping a CD or burning a DVD that can easily eat all of your 2G of memory, depending on your settings. Like when you burn a DVD it will have FAST which gives all the priority to the burn or it’ll say slow which give least priority to the DVD burn.
Memtest is great if you want to test the reliability of your RAM
Mac OS 10.4.11
Mac G5. They released the intel a couple weeks after I bought mine. Fuckers.
Safari 4.0.2, Which I just downloaded. It seems like I downloaded 4.0.1 just a couple weeks ago.
I opened Safari just now, and it got stuck opening the start page. Force quit says "Safari not responding.
I’m trying Firefox right now. So far, no problems.
Here’s a memtest utility: http://www.command-tab.com/2008/01/11/how-to-test-ram-under-mac-os-x/
But, what you are describing isn’t a memory problem - Sounds more like an internet / Safari / plug-ins sort of problem.
I’ve kinda come to that conclusion. At first I thought it was just slow, but everything else works fine. Including Firefox so far.
I’ll look at your link anyway.
