Arguably, but you do occasionally get counter movements. Much of the United states’ unusually high ( by modern, “western” standards ) religiosity can be laid to the pattern of Great Awakenings. Particularly the second, but as detailed there have arguably been several. In the 20th/21rst century it is possible to maybe speak of two steps forward, one step back in this respect. But in the U.S. in particular we do seem to have intermittent spurts of greater religious fervor such that to speak of steady decline is problematic. At least over U.S. history as a whole.
And they, believe me, don’t say anything like the stupid shit people here say. Our relationships are pretty much a throwback to the…wait for it…50s and 60s, where people allowed each other their own opinions and live-and-let-live was the order of the day. We’re also respectful of each other, and unlike a good many of this board’s posters they don’t react like rabid badgers at the merest hint of a conservative belief.

Of course if you were white, well off, and lived in the right areas, it was indeed a golden era. You didn’t lock your car, your bike or your front door. There were no riots, no murderous crackheads and junkies, and the only real problem was the rising cancer rate and the threat of nuclear war.
And commies. And the minorities, who were getting all uppity. And politicians. And this place called Nam.
Hell, it was a goddamn brave new world, where Chimp kidneys were transplanted into people, and they survived! The people, not the chimps. Well, they survived for about 3 to 6 months, but then every last one of them died from an unusual respiratory infection and a failed immune system.
But goddamn if we didn’t transplant a lot of chimp parts into people back then.

And the pollution. Before the EPA had had enough time to enforce the newer environmental laws, it was amazingly bad. The Cuyahoga River caught on fire a few (at least thirteen) times, and don’t even think about Love Canal.
