Okay, my birthday was the fifteenth (a couple of days ago - big 18 now!), and I recieved a gift in the mail today. It was addressed to Dan <Lastname>, which is rather unusual, as all my friends, relatives, family, etc. know me by Danny, except for colleges and my sister. The package said “Happy Birthday to You,” and included a 1.7 oz bottle of Lancome Eau de Toilette (which retails for ~$30) and some lotion made in Monaco. In the box was also an ad for some fragrance website, which I regarded as usual package filler that people stuff in your order. Well, I looked up the return address, and it was from the same company as the ads - www.fragrancenet.com - and it had an order number, which requires an email address. So I plugged in my order number and the emails of my sis, myself, etc., but it was no good.
So I have an anonymous person sending me fragrance-thingies.
I told the story to my friends, one of whom also recently had a birthday, and he recieved a Mach 3 and some shaving cream in the mail from Gillette on his birthday. So, is this the new wave of advertising - random loss-leading economics?
Really, though, has anyone else ever recieved anything like this, or am I the victim of a birthday-conscious identity thief, a sister’s odd joke, or something else? Any experiences?
I believe that only guys get the Gillette razor when they turn 18, and I was also under the impression that Gillette got the names and addresses from the Selective Service registrations.
Either way, my Gillette Sensor Excel is still in fine condition 8 years later.
I just got a Gillette Mach 3 in the mail last week, but is was not related to a birthday or anything, I think it was just a marketing thing. Give me the razor, and make money off the cartridges.
I’ll probably use it when my electric razor breaks down someday.
