Often times when I play Warcraft 3, my computer will reboot with no warning except that for about half a second before it restarts a blue screen with hexidecimal numbers pops up. This only happens when I’m playing WC3 but nobody else I know has had this problem, so I was wondering, first, if anyone else has had this problem, what causes it (I suspect memory problems,) and how to solve it. For reference here are my specs: Windows XP home, P4 CPU 1700MHz, Phoenix ROM BIOS+ Version 1.10 A08, 256MB RAM. DX Diagnostic says my page file is 306megs used, and 312 MB is avalible at the moment (with WC3 running.)
This has been happening for more than a year now (before, and after the expansion pack) and its really frustrating. Any help is appreciated.
Brainchild876 had this problem. It turned out that his motherboard wasn’t stable. He had to turn down the front side bus (in CMOS setup) from 133 to 131MHz in order to keep it from rebooting. So you might want to give that a try.
Reasons for sudden reboots can vary. Usual suspects are the power supply, RAM, and XP’s reboot on error setting.
Go to Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery Settings/Advanced/System Failure/Automatically restart. Uncheck this box.
However, since you mention that this only happens when you’re playing a specific game, it’s more likely (though not certainly) software/conflict related than hardware related.
Run some tests on your RAM, see if it’s stable. That way you can rule out (or in) a memory problem.
