Rant-a Claus is coming to town! (December mini-rants)

So my prescription insurance is through CVS. And so I have to use CVS pharmacy (at least that’s how I understand it.) They strongly push for 90 day supplies and sometimes automatically switch prescriptions to 90 days supplies even after I ask them not to. It is really frustrating.

So, I finally have my brain drugs dialed in and I requested 90 day supplies from my psychiatrist so that I could make CVS happy. He sends them in but they don’t fill right away because I still had a couple weeks from my last fill. And I promptly forget about it because, of course I do, only to be reminded when I run out. So, now I’m completely out and I run urgently to the CVS, expecting to pick up 90 day supplies of my two prescriptions, only to find they never filled them. Why, you ask? The total was over $100.

OK, CVS, do you want or do you not want to do 90 day supplies? Which is it? How do I make this work?

(The CVS filled them after I gave my OK for the cost, because what else was I supposed to do, and they filled them quickly and I have no complaints with the pharmacy staff at that store, just CVS as a whole)

Back in the days when I would still bother putting Christmas lights on the house, I would check all of the strings of lights when I pulled them out of storage and make sure they still lit up. Then I’d go hang them on the house, and invariably after I strung them up and plugged them in, then there would be one or two strings where half the lights wouldn’t light. Which is why I quit putting lights on the house.

Same… and onions. I hate onions. Glad to see I’m not alone reading the rest of the comments here.

Let me clarify. I said I don’t hate onions. That’s true for onions that are properly cooked. If they are cooked down and caramelized, fried, or made tender, they can be delicious. (They still make me sick but they can be quite tasty and enjoyable going in, just not so much going out.)

But raw onions are evil.

I use dried onion flakes to season, but I only use real onions with one dish, and they’re spun through a food processor with ham until it’s almost a paste, and the picture is low cooked with whine until the onions are sweated.

No bell peppers. The mouth feel is terrible.
Same with mushrooms.
Same with kidney and lima beans.
Same with peanut butter (I love peanuts, though. And almond butter).

I’m not sure about the mouth feel of liver because the smell is enough to nauseate me. And eggplant. Ugh.

With the possible exception of the liver, these tend to be pretty common in those prepared meal plans. Especially the diet ones.

I had to deal with 2 nice drivers in my one mile drive back from lunch. They’re just the worst. I had to make 2 very simple left turns onto not very busy roads. But the person coming the other way just had to stop and wave me across. Then I’m sitting there trying to figure out what it is they are doing. If they had just followed the rules of the road I’d have made my turn much faster as there was no one coming behind in either case. I want to carry a big sign that says “You’re not helping! Just fucking drive!”

Like a good part of the country, I’m preparing for the frigid temps forecast heading into Christmas. It’s going to be in single digits here (3 on Thursday night) for at least three nights. Not a normal thing for Memphis. That’s bad enough but the winds are going to be gusting to 40 mph. That always means power outages. The electrical infrastructure is in bad shape but god forbid we pay more taxes to upgrade it. So I’m preparing as best I can for the possibility.

On top of that, I have to bring in the two neighborhood cats I feed. They have a shelter complex on the front porch but that won’t do with temps this cold. I’m getting the spare room ready for them. That’s going to make Seven (their friend I kept permanently inside after last year’s ice storm) unhappy because she thinks of that room as hers. And Buddy and BJ hate to be inside. I’ll have to keep them in for three or four days and they will let me know how unhappy they are about it.

It’s shaping up to be an interesting Christmas. Fingers crossed that’s it not cold and dark with yowling cats.

Best of luck to you. Do you have any straw available. Lining their shelters with straw makes wonderful insulation. I live in a colder land than you (3F was our high temp today) and outdoor cats can survive it easily if they have an insulated home.

Not recommending they stay outside but if they fight coming in or refuse to be caught, it is a workaround that helps.

I hear ya.

“Don’t be nice, be predictable and take your fucking right of way!”

I’ve actually been wanting to post something like this for the last couple weeks.

The shelters do have straw and are great for normal winter temps. I bring them in if it gets below 20, which used to be fairly rare, one night here and there. For the last three years it’s been for days at a time for more than once per winter.

It’s more for me so I won’t worry constantly about them being so very cold. I’d rather hear some yowling from warm cats. They do ok for a day or so. Then they start thinking they will never get out. Silly cats. They won’t remember that they spent a toasty week in there last year and still got to be free in the end. :smile_cat:

I have no issue with bell peppers…unless they’re green. They’re awful, yet they seem to be the go-to bell pepper in prepared foods. According to a cousin (who never missed a chance to lecture Mom for using red, yellow, and orange bell peppers in her cooking), green bell peppers are the least expensive, which probably explains why they show up so often.

Because they are cheaper. But yes, depending on when you add them, they do flavor everything. I used to hate it, and the same with celery. But over time, my dislike fell away and now I cook with both. I do prefer organic celery over conventional. It just tastes better to me.

I’ve finally welcomed celery seeds into my kitchen, and I used a tiny amount of celery in making soup, so I’m getting there.

I recently bought a car, and I think it’s cursed. I have had so many close calls, including almost being flattened by a big truck. I almost hit a deer. I will cry if I have to buy another car any time soon, because I’m very tired of car shopping. I think this should have been included in the dealer’s disclosure documents. :pouting_cat:

My rule #1 of the road; don’t go out of your way to be courteous. That doesn’t mean be a jerk (in fact, rule #2 of the road is “don’t be an asshole”) but if you are doing something unusual to “be nice” you’re probably causing a problem. And the few times I feel especially charitable and decide to do something like yield when I’m not supposed to, I almost always regret it.

In my experience green bell peppers are more bitter than red/yellow/orange/any others. That’s probably why they’re cheaper. But, eh, they’ll do for me if I have nothing else.

N.M my rant is I’m too dumb to know which thread I’m in.

So many polar opposites here.

Love mushrooms.
Love raw onion.
Despise cooked onion but will tolerate it in small amounts like meatloaf or pot pies.
Hate bell pepper and bell pepper hates me.

ETA: My actual rant.
Amazon package left in mailbox. Wedged into mailbox and couldn’t be removed. Had to cut the box apart with a knife to get it out.

First day I’m kinda sorta recovered from the flu. Finally I can get some work done for the first time this crazy month!

“…Hi, Ms. Weasel? Wee Weasel’s fingernails are blue and his hands are cold. We just thought we’d let you know. No, no fever or anything…”

“Okay. That’s weird. Keep me posted…”

does tiny amount of work

“Hi, Ms. Weasel? Wee Weasel now has a fever of 102.”

scours empty grocery aisles for children’s medication. Finds nothing but organic(!) cold medication. Pays $30 for medication he won’t take because he refuses to eat or drink anything unfamiliar

Kisses work week goodbye

He seems okay. Fever of 100F when I got him home, he ate a little, played half-heartedly for a while and then zonked out when I put him to bed early.

The biggest bummer is Friday Sr. Weasel and I were supposed to take vacation time and have a day with just the two of us while our son was in daycare. I do not foresee that panning out.

In the past few months I’ve started feeding a neighborhood cat, and I’ve started worrying about how he’s going to cope with the cold weather. Bringing him in is not an option, as my own cat has expressed very firm opinions on his presence on my deck which leads me to believe that he will not react well to having him in the house. There is no place In the house where I can keep another cat isolated.

A neighbor had previously mentioned that she had access to a shelter that she was willing to put on my deck, but we’re afraid that it will be taken over by the raccoons that have been coming around at night (which is why I don’t leave food out overnight).

I will eat bell pepper raw, I absolutely love it (though if you’re looking for an excuse not to eat it, it’s apparently a top carrier of the coronavirus for days.)

Mushrooms are like eating slugs, no thank you.

My husband eats bell pepper raw but he eats it whole like a monster, as if he is biting into an apple. This is how lazy he is in the kitchen.
