OK, the obvious thing is that currently the reactors are out of control. But what the fuck do they mean by “under control”?
OK now that is just pure horseshit. There are no “reactors” in the sense of a working reactor, or anything resembling a reactor anymore. I mean, give it up already. Nobody with a clue thinks it is a matter of dealing with “a reactor” at this point.

No, in no possible stretch of the words can you call it “cold shutdown”. That’s what you call a reactor that is intact after you have it cooled down to the point where it’s not boiling water. Which means you have a healthy circulation of water so the core is cooled faster than it can boil water. In an intact working reactor this is possible.
But you don’t get to say a melted pile of nuclear fuel somewhere under a ruined reactor is in “cold shutdown”.
But, at least they are saying what is fucking obvious for the last 6 months. That the steaming pile of shit that used to be three reactors is still boiling away, polluting the planet with radioactive material, and the whole thing is totally out of fucking control.
Because that is what they are really saying. That three reactors are out of control, and they are boiling away somewhere in a flooded building, and releasing radiation into the air and ground and ocean. All the time.
But don’t use the term “cold shutdown” to blow smoke up our ass. As the article says, “Cold shutdown refers to a stable condition with the core temperature below 100 degrees Celsius, the boiling point of water.”
There is no fucking “core” left. That train left the station by March 13th
What you got is three ruined reactors, with melted fuel somewhere, and a radioactive shit hole, with four ruined buildings, all of which are still full of steaming spent fuel ponds brimming with dangerous nuclear material, none of which anyone can move, much less make safe any time soon.
Yeah, it’s a fucking disaster. Pretending it didn’t happen will not solve the problem. No matter what lies the media tries to sell.
Like I said in the OP, the problem is not fear. The problem is not the threat to nuclear power. The problem is four ruined buildings, three fucked reactors, and a shit ton of spent fuel rods, all of which are actually dangerous.

Meanwhile, it turns out the Lake Ana reactors didn’t shut down due to loss of external power after all. They went into auto shutdown because of a problem with the reactors, due to the earthquake. Which as it turns out, did exceed the design limits of the reactors.

TEPCO finds own nuclear accident manual useless
TOKYO (Kyodo) – Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s in-house report showed Sunday the utility has found its own emergency manual was useless for handling the crisis at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant and also repudiated the widely-held belief that a hydrogen explosion might have occurred at its No. 2 reactor.
The report indicated the utility prepared the manual with a view to dealing with nuclear plant accidents including severe incidents on the assumption that emergency power generators, including diesel generators, would work properly to keep reactor cooling systems functioning.
