Of course. I know people who have done so (well, not exactly the scenarios in John’s hypotheticals), and they were good people, desperate for a child to call their own.
IMO, it is not ethical to do this, so at the risk of sounding hard-hearted (and I’m not), no, I don’t think it is warranted.
