One of the most famous photos (of a child in ruins) of WWII is from the rape of Nanking
Not to hijack the thread (or send it off to GD), but while Chang’s book’s is the most famous book about the massacre, it should be remembered that she is a journalist, not a historian, and her book doesn’t follow scholarly rules for sources and cites as well as it could. If you’re interested in the subject, it might be worthwhile to find a more serious book on Amazon.
I’ve heard of it. Not in school, but that’s because we never covered WWII.
One reason it doesn’t get talked about that much is because that while Holocaust denial is (I believe) a crime in Germany, and will get you laughed out of just about any serious debate, there are many prominent members of the Japanese government who publicly hold the position that the Rape of Nanking never happened.
Also, checking out the Amazon reviews of The Rape of Nanking, What Really Happened in Nanking and The Alleged “Nanking Massacre”, there are still many who believe it all to be Chinese propaganda.
Wow… I’m shocked by those comments. Although I can kind of see how the manipulation/exaggeration of the incident for propaganda purposes by China could invite doubts regarding the specifics to some extent, I can’t believe that there are still those outside of Japan who deny the massacre.
That photo was of a bombing raid in Shanghai.Nanking didn’t enjoy as much picture coverage.
Google " chinese baby in bomb ruins" turns this up=
One was a photograph of a baby, a refugee, sitting all alone and crying in the bombed ruins of the north railroad station in Shanghai. This was in 1937. The photographer had the improbable name of Newsreel Wong and is a legend in Chinese photojournalism. Wong’s picture went all around the world and many people for the first time understood the effect of that war on civilians.
I remember seeing it in a Life magazine,in a photo retrospective on WW11;sometime after the war.
Yes. Re: Rape of Nanking: A poli-sci major friend discussed it and showed a book with graphic photos.
Many of us know about other events like the Bataan death march, etc.
