Raw songs

nm

“Can’t Let Go,” as interpreted by Lucinda Williams.

Whipping Post- Allman Brothers

“Our Town” by Iris Dement

Came in to post exactly that.

I’d second koeeoaddi’s “Waltz #2

That one doesn’t grab me, but “Haligh, Haligh, A Lie, Haligh” does.

The Honorary Title “Everything I Once Had
Alexz Johnson “Skin
The Offspring “Gone Away
The Pale Pacific “Sucker Punch
Cat Power “He War
Damien Rice “Rootless Tree
Ani DiFranco “Untouchable Face
The National “Available” (losing respect for someone is a loss, right?)

“Something to Believe In,” by Poison, was based in part on the death of lead singer Bret Michaels’ best friend.

“Landed” by Ben Folds is pretty raw, also.

Klaus Nomi songs Purcell’s “Cold Song” live
Dying of AIDS, he really seems to be staring Death in the face.

Practically anything by Robert Johnson, but “Love in Vain,” and “Hellhound on my Trail” in particular.

Growing up, I thought nothing could be more raw than Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt.

Then, of course, Johnny Cash coveredit.
Ouch.

St. James Infirmary

Frankie And Johnny

Danny Boy

The Rueben James

Oh, My Darling Clementine (if you skip the last verse!)

And what’s that more recent song about the cowboy who goes to visit his girlfriend in the Mexican cantina and gets shot?

El Paso - Marty Robins?

Not what *I’d *call ‘raw’, but opinions differ…

I thought again about my contribution to this thread and decided that my choice wasn’t so much raw as it was heartbreaking.

I think your choice isn’t really raw either. But it is absolutely the best treat I have had in a long, long time. What an insanely superb performance. And thank you so much for the lyrics.

Warren Zevon

Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door

My Shit’s Fucked Up

In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins

Two from the Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers, my all-time favorite album:

Sway

Sister Morphine

Had the iPod on shuffle this morning and a pretty raw one came up…Screaming at a Wall by Minor Threat.

O.K., I should have asked this before my earlier posting when I made a wild guess, but what does “raw” mean in the context of music and this thread? I’ve never heard it so used before.

Holy crap. How could I have forgotten:

Neil Young - Tonight’s the Night

A tribute to Bruce Berry, one of his roadies who died of a heroin overdose.

Raw.
mmm

Either the tone of the music itself or the plaintive, open, and exposed feeling of the lyrics or the singer.
