Not a scientist or anything, but symptoms of the brain damage you refer to do not normally show till years after the player is retired. The question is whether this behavior is out of character for him. Problem with THAT is that lots of abusers have managed to keep the abuse hidden, even from close friends.
The prosecution had the video that everyone is seeing now. They could’ve easily proceeded without her if they wanted.
I heard rice can’t even play in the Canadian football league because they have an agreement with the nfl not to hire suspended players. So it looks like arena football is it.
Yeah, this is bad. Very bad.
Apparently, the local jurisdiction decided not to press charges. IANAL, but I don’t personally understand why a prosecutor would need the victim’s testimony against the perp in a case like this when the video evidence is so overwhelming.
And let’s talk about the video.
I have watched this a number of times. Here is what I see. If other’s see differently, feel free to chime in.
At the beginning of the video, it appears as if Ray Rice spits in her face. She slaps him in the face, not exactly hard, but she does connect. Ray Rice is not injured by this, and follows her to the elevator.
In the elevator, words are exchanged and he spits on her again. She then smacks him a second time, and that is when he gives her a left hook Tyson would have been proud of.
Seriously, is the idea that she didn’t let Rice spit on her without saying something or smacking Rice in his face (which he deserved if he DID spit in her) what she is referring to when she regrets “the part she played in the attack.”?
The other thing that I noticed immediately was the lack of a reaction from Rice after the blow. If he had never hit his fiancee before, I would think a normal person would react in horror. If someone threw a punch but never thought the result would be a knockout blow, I would think panic would wash over that person, he would be immediately go down to the ground and check to see if she was ok. He would have some urgency to his actions. Instead, he nonchalantly moves around the elevator until it opens up, then pulls her out like a sack of fertilizer.
This is disgusting. I am disgusted on so many levels at so many people. Of course Ray Rice is on that list. It looks like he spits on the mother of his children twice, and then clocks her when she objects to being a human spittoon.
Ray Rice will never play in the NFL again. Because as soon as someone would sign him, this video will be played over and over again. He is a PR nightmare. I will be shocked if he is ever picked up, but hell, this video shocked me so I guess anything is possible.
But it is more than Ray Rice. I am disgusted by Roger Goodell. He should resign immediately. He won’t, but the owners need to fire him. There is no way I can believe the NFL didn’t see this tape. I know the NFL and the Ravens both are both claiming ignorance here, but I believe they both saw this tape, especially when the casino has stated they gave the police the tape right after the incident.
I have so many questions. And I am angry that the arrogance of the NFL, the Ravens, and Ray Rice all seemed to think that what he did was “a mistake”, “forgivable”, and “a lesson to learn from.” The man should be in jail. How is this not a clear example of assult?
One more thing that is tangential to this… Back when the Patriots were nailed in the “spygate” scandal, Goodell had the tapes destroyed, saying there “wasn’t anything else to learn”. Does anyone believe that now? I didn’t believe it then, but it is clear to me that Goodell’s sole mission in life is to “protect the shield”.
When something so clear cut as this… So wrong as this is swept under the carpet in the hopes that it will go away, we all need to ask ourselves “why”?
Count me as another one that doesn’t quite get this. Everyone knew Rice knocked his GF the fuck out. We saw him drag her unconscious body from the elevator. Now that video comes out of him knocking her the fuck out his suspension goes from 2 games to forever? What exactly did people expect a NFL player knocking his GF unconscious to look like? A tickle fight?
The NFL is completely dropping the ball here. Two games wasn’t close to enough. Forever is too long. It sounds like they are going Goldilocks on us and will settle for a year suspension (which seems appropriate).
Correct.
Wrong.
But let’s suspend Josh Gordon for a year for…petty shit that doesn’t rise to a level that would be a problem for the FAA or the International Olympic Committee.
Fire the whole NFL administration and start over.
Someone needs to let samclem know that SenorBeef is somehow posting from his account.
This. X100.
I was also taken aback by the security guards non-chalant reaction too. Who walks up on a scene like that and non-reacts like that? A guy is dragging an unconscious woman out of an elevator by her ankles and the dude acts like he sees it every single day. Where did the casino find this guy?
You could sum it up in three words as “the system sucks.” I admit it’s not exactly a nuanced analysis, but as people online are pointing out - there was video of Ray Rice beating her and knocking her unconscious and he got off with probation. What do we think happens in lots of cases where there isn’t video?
This precisely. As someone who used to volunteer at a women’s shelter, the reason many stay with their abusers (no matter what socio-economic class they came from) was simple… they loved and, sadly, were always conditioned to believe he’d change. Why? A whole host of issues. Sometimes because of poor self-esteem. Others out of a fear of abandonment or that they’d never find anyone else again. Still more because of fear. Then add in things like children, lack of anywhere else to go (no support from loved ones / no education or ability to support themselves), mental illness, you name it.
The “blaming the victim” mentality of some is disgusting and, in light of all the information about this sort of thing these days, pathetic and ridiculous. Gold digger, unless proven so conclusively, my ass.
It wasn’t just that one guy either. By the end, wasn’t there like three others just milling around and staring at her while she was still half conscious? It was only until some woman walked up and helped her that anyone did anything. It was absolutely horrific, the whole thing from start to finish.
At this point, the NFL can reinstate him tomorrow, no team will pick him up and it’s unlikely he’ll ever play professional football again. The team that touches him faces certain sponsor-death. Of course, for the same reason, the NFL won’t reinstate him or mitigate the suspension unless a court orders them to. Money talks and bullshit punks (like Ray “Tough Guy” Rice) walk.
I haven’t heard; what are the current state of criminal charges, if any?
Also, IYO, how much more would have to happen for enough owners to decide that the way Roger Goodell is handling everything from discipline to concussions is bad for business and do something about it?
Hooray for TMZ! If it wasn’t for them, none of this would be happening. The NFL would never have admitted to seeing the video and Ray Rice would be playing.
And yet another reason to consider FOXNews a spawn of Lucifer: On their morning talk/news show, the hosts’ take-away message regarding the Ray Rice fiasco was: “If you’re gonna use an elevator, remember there’s a camera.” (That’s an actual quote, said amidst chuckles and laughter.)
 How sick.
Eh, they said the same thing about Vick.
I could give the guard a pass. You walk up on a scene like that, you don’t want to escalate it and/or get the guy to attack YOU. But for Rice himself, yeah, his non-chalance at having just knocked out the mother of his kids is pretty freaking telling. He’s done it before. Plus the way he spit at her. That shows utter contempt.
When I first watched the video, I didn’t realize that Ray had spit on Janay, which is what prompted her to strike him in the face. I also didn’t realize that he spit on her again in the elevator; I thought he had struck her in the midsection which then prompted her to attempt retaliation. After reading the quoted post above, I watched the video again and concur that this is an accurate description and summary of the events in the video.
It did look to me like the hotel employee told Ray to move away from Janay after the aborted attempt to get her on her feet and was on his phone or radio calling for help immediately thereafter. It took him 20 seconds or so to size up the situation and take control of it; that’s pretty good for hotel security, IMO.
Vick is a QB. A talented one. NFL running backs like Rice, even though you could say he’s above average, they’re still a dime a dozen. Plus he’s 27, already coming off a bad season, and approaching the downside of the life cycle of NFL running backs. For sure he won’t play this season, and is iffy for next season. So he’d have to get himself reinstated THEN prove he can still perform at 29 years old. It won’t happen. Rice is done.
