Re GWB's legacy - Is he one of the worst POTUS' ever will historians redeem him?

Watch the beginning of this John Oliver piece from The Daily Show to see a clip of how Fox News is already trying to revise and rehab Bush’s legacy, and to see just how that effort will play to current day audiences.

My expectation is that it will take quite a long time, if ever, for this Fox type of complete bullshit to not get a derisive howl of laughter. The VHS tapes from the Quayle stuff are already showing their wear, but digital media lasts a long, long time.

Watch the rest of the piece for a good laugh at the history of Fox News.

…but what we need is another Calvin Coolidge-a guy who just STOP messing around! Coolidge used to go for long afternoon naps-during which NOTHING would happen!
We are (partly) in so much trouble because the federal government is alwystinkering around.
Coolidge said it best: “…if ten troubles are heading for you, nine of them will fall into a ditch BEFORE they reach you”!
Or my favorite Coolidge quote (by a Vermont farmer): “the nation wanted nuthin’ done-se we elected Coolidge”

Interestingly enough I’ve heard similar things about the death knell of the liberal movement (especially since they changed their names to avoid the ‘liberal’ label)…

How did that work out?

Fair point, and I’m not honestly predicting that we’ll finally be done with having to survive conservative leaders. Of course, was there a banner holder for the “liberal movement” who showed it for what it was in the same manner that Bush has showed us what we get from the conservatives?

That is inspiring, in its way. (Say, what was that thing that happened after Coolidge? The Big Bad Mood or something?)

There will always be sides and factions. No side will ever dominate to the point where they become the be all and end all…and to me that’s a good thing. Like the liberal movement I think the conservatives will be constantly re-making themselves…and I expect them to recover from Bush et al and his lame presidency. Eventually.

In theory…

Carter perhaps and some of the lame ass contenders the Dem’s threw up prior to Clinton.

-XT

You know, when you put it that way, its really the Dems fault that we elected Nixon, Reagan, and the Bushies. Why, if they hadn’t put up such lame candidates, the country wouldn’t be fucked up beyond all recognition!

Yes, I see that now…

Let us assume a hypothetical you, in which you like virtually every policy enacted by the Bush administration.

(And there are such people, perhaps a few even on this very board)

Even in that odd light, he comes across as a political maladroit who did all these right things badly, mismanaging resources that were available to him, squandering opportunities, losing Congress for his political party, alienating allies, implementing many of these admirable initiates in the most inefficient, expensive way imaginable, and most likely putting the White House in Democratic hands as well when he leaves.

That results in a verdict of well-intentioned stumblebum incompetent. I don’t see how that’s going to elevate him no matter how opinions shake out over time on the actual things that he’s done.

Three reasonably liberal candidates still in the running?

Exactly.

Add me in with the “it’s too soon” chorus. I think it’ll be very interesting in the future if Iraq does end up like the sunshine-and-lollipop place that we’ve heard it’ll be.

Personally, I don’t see it happening, but **Ravenman **already said it.

I don’t know if it’s fair to pin the housing mess on him either. It depends on who you blame. Do you blame Greenspan? The lack of regulation? I suppose you can blame a bad response to the housing crisis on Bush, if you want.

He has appointed women and people of color to high-ranking posts, but he’s also appointed cronies to important posts as well. You can make that a wash, if you choose.

G W Bush singlehandedly made it possible for a woman AND a black man to run against his party after his term was over. Either woman or black man would’ve been a feat by itself! This crosses the amazing line and lands square into the showoff lawn. No other president has done as much to break barriers and ceiling glasses in our country.

Also, in over 200 years, he is the ONLY president who ever sent me cash, TWICE. Again, once would’ve been enough, but goddamn it, Bush goes above and beyond once again.

And he boldly removed an evil dictator from power without waiting for an excuse to do so, earning himself the hatred of hundreds of millions, one year before re-election was due. Wow!

Not only has he got cojones of steel but he’s the best damned president this country or any other has ever seen as far as I’m concerned.

That said, I’m really glad he’s out of office. Man, what a twat.

You *do *know he is still in Office, right? :dubious:

You couldn’t just leave him alone, could you? Perfecly happy, thinking he’s gone, and you got to spoil his day. Sure, “fighting ignorance”, but still…

LALALA! I CAN’T HEAR YOU!

The scary part is that George Bush might be sitting in the Oval Office right now, thinking “Okay, time to go out with a big finish.”

Not in this universe. McCain’s more hawkish than Bush, and the benefits of his proposed tax cuts would go even more completely to the rich than Bush’s did. His health care plan is “unleash the free market.” 'Nuff said, I hope.

Bush should be looked at kindly regarding assisting Africa in fighting AIDS. And his cabinet may be as ethnically diverse as any have been. In the ledger of history, that’s a couple of black figures in a sea of red ink.

He will be remembered as having lied to start a war that did not have to be fought, for watching in inaction as a major city was nearly destroyed by a hurricane, for turning the US into a banana republic by authorizing and condoning the use of torture, for turning record budget surpluses into record deficits, for using “signing statements” to subvert the will of Congress, for giving no-bid contracts to his vice president’s firm, for joining Congress in meddling in the medical case of one woman, and for gutting the Constitution in the name of fighting terror.

Until the moment the 101st president is sworn in, Bush will be in the list of the top 100 presidents.
