So. The mods believe that the question was asked by a sock? A question about mapping that I haven’t seen on these boards for months?

I put a bit of time trying to help that person, and answering their question.

And then the thread just disappeared.

Do as you will, but when I asked in GQ, it would have been nice if I had some sort of response as to why it disappeared. Not just a lock down. I spent about 2 hours trying to help that poster.

There was no response to my question about the missing thread in GQ. It just got locked. No reason, no nothing.

Then my additional question in the PIT was locked with very little info.

I was just trying to help someone. I thought that’s what we did here.

We prefer that socks do not receive a great deal of attention. That is, after all, why we disappear their posts. We prefer that members email a mod when they would like to ask this sort of question. Given that most don’t, we’ll answer the question and close the thread.

Your question was answered by another poster in your closed GQ thread. It was answered by another poster and by myself in the Pit thread. How much more information do you need?

We appreciate the effort that you put into trying to help that poster. Really, we do. This board would be nothing if not for the effort that members like you put into it. Sadly, that poster was a sock puppet. Any ire that you have should be directed at the sock, who knew very well what would happen upon discovery.

I’ll leave this thread open, for now, in case you would like to turn it into a discussion of the SDMB policy of wishing socks into the cornfield.

. . .when we ban a spammer or troll or multi-identity jerk, we generally don’t bother to announce it. These people thrive on publicity, they get their jollies from trying to jerk us around, and we don’t want to give them any satisfaction.

We also usually cause their posts to “disappear.” For spammers and trolls, this is obvious, but for multi-identity people who try to sneak back in, the logic is perhaps a little less obviousl. Basically, we want them to understand that the cost of such playing around is that their history on our boards will disappear when they are found out. We hope that the removal of their posts will be an incentive for them not to bother again.

Sometimes, this causes minor inconvenience to other posters, to find that a thread has “disappeared.” The anger should be directed at the jackass who started the thread, knowing full well that would happen when they were discovered.

Dude, one of the more obvious rules around here is that if a moderator closes your thread, you don’t just take it upon yourself to reopen it. Sheesh.
