Reacher - the full-sized version is a vast improvement {Season 2, 1st 3 episodes available 2023-12-15}

It depends on its use; if the line precedes a total and complete subversion of typical movie tropes, then I like it.

If not, then not.

Anyone who didn’t work a 9-5 office job in the military learns to grab sleep just about anywhere, any time. And that includes dropping off almost immediately. This is especially true in combat arms, where extended ops totally screw up any normal sleep routine. You grab an hour here, and hour there, as you can.

And yes, people CAN develop the ability to “program” themselves to wake up at certain times; it’s not exact like an alarm clock, you might hit within 10-20 minutes of your goal, but it can be done.

In the books, Reacher has an infallible internal clock. He always knows exactly what time it is and can set his brain to wake himself up whenever he wants, to the minute.

That is true, though I cannot remember the exact quotes. In general, though, iirc @ExTank is correct about Reacher getting the habit of taking short naps when the opportunity presents itself from his military background. Maybe also for things like meals.

Yeah, I still find it hard to not wake at 7… but I just get up, have a drink of water and a pee, and go back to sleep.

But not to the minute.

Question: I have a vague familiarity with the character, and for the most part I enjoyed this series. But I didn’t know if Reacher was supposed to be … well, robotic.

What really struck me was the strange way of walking he seemed to have – very short steps, seemingly out of order with his frame. I expected someone that large to move in sort of a shambling lope (yet gracefully, because he’s obviously in tune with his movements), not like a robot.

Was that an intentional move by the actor to mimic how Reacher moves in the books, or is that just how the actor himself walks in real life?

I didn’t notice anything odd about the acting, nor do I recall anything from the books. But I do think I recall him describing himself as “not graceful.” Mainly due to his size. He often goes right at something, rather than trying to dodge or hide, He is able to move quietly, and his motions are very economical. But I don’t think you ever see him dancing, and he dislikes running.

I haven’t done a frame-by-frame motion study, but from what I remember, his movements and body language seemed pretty much identical when he played Hawk on Titans. I think that’s just how the actor actually moves, at least when he’s portraying a bad-ass action anti-hero.

WAG: the army is big on everyone walking at the same pace. His years in the military have taught him to walk with shorter steps, so that he won’t shoot ahead of whoever he was walking with.

Any clue on which book next season will based on? I’m hoping for Bad Luck and Trouble. It would be fun to have the whole crew of Special Investigators fleshed out over a long story arc.

My guess would be Die Trying, because it’s the second book.

I hope not. The plot of that one is particularly absurd, which is saying something, considering the source.

The movie ‘franchise’ cherry-picked without regard to chronology and the series should do the same.

While I agree that the plot of the novel was really absurd, I think they could use some basics as the framework for S2. I’d love to see Reacher go to town on some white supremacists in a compound in Idaho.

I recently watched and then started reading the Bosch shows/ books. It was interesting how they chose and combined elements from various books for each season.

Not sure such an approach would suit Reacher as well, as the books seem more self contained.

I should look back. As I recall, the first Reacher book I read took place somewhere in Texas or the SW, isolated off in the country. Reacher came to the rescue of some damsel in distress. All I recall is the climax involved some confrontation out in the middle of nowhere - I have a vague recollection of individuals/vehicles set up in a large circle or something… But what caught me was the portrayal of Reacher - just this guy who owned nothing, lived nowhere. Really struck a chord.

That sounds like Echo Burning.

Good call. Thx.

I also noticed his style of walking in the show, and this is the first thing that occurred to me, but I think it’s his real life walk rather than an attempt by the writers or actor to mimic army training. A 6’3" guy is always going to shorten their step when walking with average sized people or he’s going to end up with people talking to his back all the time.

The insane coincidences . like Die Trying have to be moderated. They could have done so on the first story with a Postcard or some other message from Reachers Brother telling him about small town where the Jazz musician died. Gives some plausibility to the coincidence.

Hmm. I’ve been 6’3" for 45 years, and am not aware of having to change my stride length to accommodate others.

Well I’m 6’2" and am often reminded by my 5’6" partner to slow down when walking together.
