Lee Child is on board as an executive producer. Tom Cruise not affiliated.
Hopefully, the title character will be more appropriately cast.

Isn’t he built more like Dave Bautista than Cruise?
Good call. I’m so out of touch, I had to look up who that was.
When I read the books, I always pictured a young Dolph Lundgren.
I pictured a less hairy version of Sebastien Chabal, mostly because of his French roots. Bautista is too big…Reacher isn’t a weightlifter.
I’ve heard Joel Kinnamansuggested. He’s a decent actor, and he looks the part.
Kinnaman would be good. I doubt they could get him, but I have always envisioned Tom Hardy as Reacher.
Now that you mention it, I’d almost be surprised if Kinnaman didn’t get the part. He’s close enough on size, the right age and well known enough to give the project some star appeal.
Say what you want about Tom Cruise, but that first Jack Reacher movie was loads of fun.
The second one…not so much.
I could see Paul Telfer who played the roided-up Marine in NCIS.
Reacher in the books is 6’5" and about 220 lbs and it is frequently mentioned that he is noticeably big. He turns heads and stands out in a crowd. If you’re going to try to really match his written size, even Kinnaman is too short by a few inches and too rangy/thin (though I think he’s an excellent actor).
I hope they do a good job with it. Those Cruise movies sucked eggs.
ETA: Now I see it’s being developed by the guy who created the TV show Scorpion, which is… not a hopeful sign, IMO.
Joel who? Oh, yeah, the Altered Carbon guy (and Hanna, and…)
He’d be great, the other suggestions are muscle-bound thug types, not very intelligent-looking. Reacher is smart, and dedicated.
Which was why Cruise did a great job. I’ve read all the books and wanted to hate the casting (“He’s half the size! Are the tickets 50% off too?”). I acted the same way when Tim Burton cast his Batman as… Mr. Mom?!?
But I loved the Cruise movies, because his Reacher had the intelligence and the intensity, and a laser-sharp sense of justice.
So hope they find a big guy that can pull that off.
Jared Padalecki. He’s 6’4”, 216lbs.
Right. He’s intimidating, scary. People avoid eye contact and stay out of his way, but that could play out in a different way. Considering he wears the same clothes for several days and doesn’t use deodorant, people would also avoid him because he’s a nasty, smelly hobo.
I was impressed by Rory McCann’s acting in Game of Thrones. Give him some hair and he could be Jack Reacher.
Excellent suggestions for the part of Reacher. When I read the books, I always pictured Steven Seagal as playing Reacher. But, at 67, he’s now far too old.
Man - was a huge fan of the books. Has there EVER been a worse miscasting in the history of film?
My God - doesn’t the man deserve a vacation?
Nope
It depends on the precise Reacher story being adapted, doesn’t it? We know he is canonically 6’4" or 6’5", 220-250 pounds, and there are episodes where his exact size (or lack thereof!!) plays a crucial role in the plot, but other times things hinge on his skills as a sniper, or as an investigator, and it is not mentioned how big he is.
He’s never what you’d call well-dressed, but I don’t remember him ever appearing as a “nasty, smelly hobo”. IIRC he buys a brand-new shirt pretty much every day, and sturdy pants that last him a few days (and he sleeps in a motel bed, not in his clothes). When people are on the lookout for him it’s invariably for a “big, scary-looking guy”, not a “hobo-looking guy”.
I always thought Sean Bean would make a good Reacher. He’s prob too old to do any but the most recent novels tho.
I’ve read every Reacher book by Lee Child. Pretty sure in every novel, it mentions his size.
When I discovered and read a bunch of Reacher books, the TV show Chuck was airing, so to me Reacher will always be[Adam Baldwin](Adam Baldwin).
