I definitely get a different buzz from Jagermeister. Back in college, we used to have “shot parties” where shots of various types of liquor would be consumed and Jagermeister was known as ‘Insta-party’ because everyone claimed it gave them a much happier, energetic high. But I actually think it is the “herbs” (not sure what they are) in Jager that makes it different, but I really don’t know.
Although my reason tells me it should not be, I swear I get different types of drunk on different types of alcohol. Tequila and Jagermeister are two especially notorious culprits. For the latter, I think it may be because it tastes so innocuous that it takes you unawares suddenly.
While whether different alcohols have different intoxication effects is mostly busted, I think it’s probably true that different drinks will cause different levels of queasiness and/or hangovers do to their other ingredients.
In the case of tequila, it may be because people tend to drink shit tequila. I mean, when you have to have an elaborate ritual of citrus fruits and salt to be able to down a shot, it can’t be a surprise when it makes you not feel well. I have no idea whether or not the fancier tequilas have that effect tho.
That, and people who do tequila shots tend to drink a lot of it. Good tequila won’t make you any sicker than, say, single malt scotch.
Another problem is that people are very poor at estimating the amount of alcohol they actually consume, even if you can assume that the bar/club/restaurant you’re at is not shorting you. I read studies where people could only guess how much wine was in a “standard” 7-ounce serving glass to +/- 2 ounces on average - roughly a +/- 30% error. Someone might have 1-ounce servings of scotch at home for sipping, but when they’re at a friend’s house might be served 2-3-ounce servings of Jagermeister.
All I know is when my buddy comes down into town from Roi Et, and whenever, during the course of a night out in the bars, we decide to treat ourselves to a shot or two of Jagermeister, hijinks often ensue. More than the usual ones, I mean.
I’ve always thought that people saying “I get mean on such-and-such liquor” are just making excuses for having been an asshole while drunk. kind of like that guy who blames his hangover on everything except drinking too much.
