Hijack or not, since John was a personal friend of Joe, and Bobby not only worked for him but chose him as a godfather for his first child, either they weren’t as liberal as you may think or there is no dissonance between being Cold War Warriors, which they were, and the extremely mild progressivism they espoused.
Not that the senator was excessively right-wing domestically. Or they left-wing in foreign affairs.
