Reading Question

Ok, bear with me please. This may come out even more muddled than I foresee simply because I’m not sure how to explain this, but here goes nothing anyway…

A long time ago, I remember reading about a __________ (condition/syndrome/ability/I dunno what you’d term it) that people had whenever they saw numbers (or maybe letters or even whole words) that then allowed them to represent it with a color as well as a written interpretation.

For example, erm, say 9 is also seen as “red.” Or however that would work.

All right, is everyone with me thus far? Hopefully?? Helloooooooo?

I suppose I’ll forge ahead regardless. :stuck_out_tongue:

Now, how about, similar to what I’ve tried to woefully describe above, is there a __________ (condition/syndrome/ability/I dunno what you’d term it), where a person sees a word in advance that they are about to read, yet substitute it for something else they like better?

Another example, por favor.

IE: Sally watched the dog jump over the ball.

Revised: Sally watched the dog leap over the ball.

Meaning the intent is basically the same, just a different word is preferred. Kinda like having a constant thesaurus running in your head.

If that remotely sounds not completely like hogwash, anyone ever do this? Heard or read about others that might? Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp.
Gracias.

Well, the first condition you described is called synesthesia, where more than one sense is involved in perceptions, e.g, numbers appear as colors, shapes or sounds can evoke tastes, etc. It’s been referred to as a cross-wiring in the brain.

For the second condition, I don’t know any name for it, but it would seem that some terms are inextricably linked with their synonyms. The word is jump, but you automatically substitute leap, or the word is azure, but you see the word blue instead. It is something similar to dyslexia - maybe syn-lexia?

Synesthesia is right for the first one. It is supposed to be pretty cool and many people don’t even know they have it until they find out that other people can’t smell red and have no idea what color “5” is. There are some people on this board that claim to have it and I have even seen tests on the web that can demonstrate if people have certain kinds of it. For example, a jumbled picture of numbers will display a picture if you process the number 8 as a unique color in the pattern. I don’t have it myself but it is well documented and Google can give lots of info.

I did that as a kid learning piano, music theory, and composition. Each of the 24 major and minor keys suggested a color to me. B Major was purple. B minor was dark purple. C Major was white. C minor was black. D Major was bright green, d minor was dark green, etc.

Ah, thank you all so much. I knew the first example had I name and specifics behind, but wasn’t sure about whether the second did or not. I appreciate everyone’s responses.
